Jon tells Mxy how his father used to talk about Mxy as part of his bedtime stories. Jon couldn't say the words "purple hat" so it would come out Ruppletat. In turn Mxy explains what happened to him. While returning to Earth for his quarterly appointment with Superman Mxy was taken captive by Mister Oz. Oz had plans for Superman and Mxy might prove to be trouble so Oz will keep Mxy captive until those plans are concluded. Mxy is sure Superman will come looking for him but he never did. Eventually Mxy said his name backwards enough times to escape but he needed a disguise. He assumed the form of Clark and put a whammy on himself to make him forget who he was. After seeing Jon and Clark and Lois together Mxy finally remembered. He allows Jon to think he's escaped but then reveals that he is still a captive until Superman can find him. Mxy used the same sneaky trick that Superman used on him for years. With that Mxy summons a deck of cards and asks Jon if he has any fives.

The issue begins with Superman rescuing and repairing a submarine. As he saves the lives of the crew, Lois calls him worried that he's working too hard lately considering the events of the last couple months. Before the Man of Steel can return home, his super hearing picks up the sounds of screams and gunfire. Without a moment's hesitation, he springs into action, making a beeline for the Caucasus Mountains. There, he finds terrorists and wolves attacking innocent civilians. The Last Son of Krypton makes short work of the assailants before noticing mind-controlling microchips on the sides of their necks. Superman realizes this incident was the work of the Machinist and demands the villain reveal himself. As is common practice with the Machinist, the real guy isn't who's behind the mask. A quick zap of heat vision and the attackers pass out. As the civilians regather themselves, one of the locals directs Superman's attention to a TV where an attack of a similar nature is occurring in Germany. Superman closely examines the microchip only to discover that they were manufactured by LexCorp. The Action Ace promptly makes his way to the LexCorp tower to confront Luthor. Luthor claims innocence in the situation, insisting that his work was stolen. After a brief back-and-forth, the two decide to team up to resolve the issue. Using a tracking device, the two come up on the Kashmir/India border where Lex is shot down by a barrage of missiles. The Metropolis Marvel saves Luthor before he hits the ground, only to find an army of militarized tigers and elephants. The two spring into action as the Machinist appears. Just as Lex goes to put up a force field to protect himself, he is hit with a microchip. Now under the Machinist's command, Lex Luthor is ordered to kill Superman.

Lex and Superman are engaged in battle. The Machinist watches from the sidelines, informing Superman that the mind-tick elicits the host's inner-most desire. Superman and Lex battle it out a bit more before Superman drags his opponent into space. Lex goes into his usual tirade of Superman being an alien. The Man of Steel notices that the Apokoliptian tech in Lex's battle suit is making Lex more like Darkseid (see the events of The Darkseid War). Superman is hit by kryptonite darts and plummets to earth. Lex flies after him and has his suit activate every feature that he built. Before the two can hit the ground, Superman regains consciousness and prevents an impact. With Lex's suit out of commission, Superman is left to take on The Machinist's army alone. Before he can be captured, The Machinist makes an escape. After the fighting is done, Lex and Superman share a moment. Back at Lexcorp, Lex reviews the footage captured by his suit when he stumbles upon an odd symbol. Still skeptical, Kal digs for answers regarding his father's survival of Krypton's destruction. Jor-El uses the crystals in the Fortress to show his son what happened in the days before the death of their world. The story plays out as normal, but continues after Kal's ship left the planet. Apparently, as Krypton was dying, a mysterious force rescued Jor-El and sent him to a war ravaged country on Earth. There, he was taken in and given shelter by a family struggling to survive during a murderous rebel gang's reign of terror. When the gang cuts off food supplies for the innocent villagers, Jor-El is asked by the family to leave. Feeling he owes the family for their kindness, he sneaks into the gang's camp and steals food for them. Unfortunately, one of the children in the family reveals the existence of the refugee hiding in his home to gain favor with the warlord. The family is attacked and the child is forced to murder his family. Enraged, Jor-El lets loose a stream of heat vision, mowing down the wicked men. He is once again taken by a mysterious force and shown the wickedness of man and the horrors of the past. Superman argues that not all humans are wicked - that mankind has a great capacity for good. At the Daily Planet, a man walks into the bullpen rambling about reporters printing fake news. Carrying a pistol, he reveals a bomb strapped to his chest. Meanwhile, Superman and Jor-El continue to talk in the Fortress. The Man of Steel refuses to leave Earth, despite Jor-El insisting that all humans are wicked. To prove his point, Jor-El has Kelex pull up newsfeed videos of atrocities happening all over the globe (many of which Jor influenced, by the way). Kal flies off to stop chemical weapons from being used in Logamba. Back in Metropolis, Lois tries to reason with the terrorist. Steve Lombard tries to save the day, but gets shot in the chest. To keep Jon, Perry, Jimmy, and the other Planet staffers safe, Lois strikes a deal with the terrorist: she'll write a story from his perspective verbatim and publish it on the Planet's website, but only if he lets the others leave. A deal is made, but Lois has a trick up her sleeve. With access to a keyboard, she can send a message to the Fortress to let Clark know there's trouble. Over in Logamba, the country's leaders prepare to launch a full-on chemical assault on the country's own citizens. As the chemical missiles are fired, Superman arrives and destroys the launchers. With great speed, the Man of Steel flies after the missiles to disarm and destroy them. Lois has finished typing the story, but hasn't had a chance to send a distress signal with her captor looking over her shoulder. Momentarily distracted, the man looks out the window, allowing Lois to call for help. Suddenly, the terrorist is taken out by a speeding blur. Jor-El now stands in the office of the Daily Planet. Down on the street, Jon sneaks away from "Uncle" Perry and makes a quick change into Superboy. Across the globe, Superman has successfully rendered the chemical containers useless and destroyed the remaining missiles. Jor-El and Lois briefly talk before the staff of the Daily Planet return. Jor-El leaves, only to confront Superboy moments later. The two teleport to the Fortress where Jor strives to win Jon over by promising him a world where he wouldn't have to hide his true self. Jor-El has plans to take him to a new world.
