After a concert Zor-El, Alura and Kara are attacked by the insurrectionists. Security is called to the scene but not before Kara is hurt. Meanwhile Zod and Jor-El duke it out once and for all. Jor-El is sorry it had to end this way but Zod is ruthless in his conviction. Zod tries to use the Phantom Zone projector on Jor-El but Jor-El swats it away, picks it up and uses it on Zod. Afterwards Jor-El smashes it to pieces. On returning home Jor-El finds Lara contemplating her discovery. She comforts him while he tells her the fight with Zod is over. Lara asks how long Krypton has and Jor-El tells her mere months. Lara then shows him her discovery. A map showing other habitable planets where their son could survive. This is not an end but a beginning.
Story - 4: While most of this issue is one big slugfest it does get straight to the point. Things finally start bubbling over for the people of Krypton and the El family stands in its remnants. I was surprised by the ending not really ending. Krypton still stands and Kal-El is yet to be born. Also it seems the El brothers haven't had much contact in awhile. They're both working for the same cause but separately. Zod naively is trying to find a Safe Zone to put the planet Krypton while Jor has resigned to the fact that Krypton can't be saved, though now discovering there may be a way to save his son.
This series remained fairly consistent in its story and tone. While certain issues seemed to just go through the motions, telling the story of the end of Krypton, it continually remained a book about family and honor. I overall enjoyed this book (with some nitpicking) and I'm curious to see if there's a follow up taking us to the very end and the subsequent journey from Krypton to earth for little Kal-El.
Art - 4: I think the one thing I can truly say was the highlight of this series is the art. While I'm not a fan of Oeming's faces, which I feel are a bit too angular, the rest of the art in this book has been fantastic. The vistas, the buildings, the planet's machines and inner workings were rendered beautifully.
Cover Art - 3: The covers have all been of the same quality. While adequately done they haven't been very dynamic or portray exactly what's happening in the issue. Well drawn just not to my liking.
Variant Cover Art - 4: This is a very well drawn clean take on Kara (Supergirl) holding her baby cousin. This does not happen in the issue but it's a nice image.
