Brian Michael Bendis Tackles “Truth, Justice and the American Way”

Speaking at this weekend’s Emerald City Comic Con, writer Brian Michael Bendis spoke about his plans for taking over the Superman books, and specifically touched on his new approach to the idea of Superman fighting for “Truth, Justice and the American Way”.

Bendis said he’s found new relevance in Superman’s “truth, justice and the American way” adage, which helped inspire him to take on the Man of Steel. “Truth is under siege in our society today,” Bendis continued. “Justice – we see it every day on video, justice is not being handed out to everybody. The American dream, that is also under siege. These things, that seemed cliche just five years ago, are now damn well worth fighting for.”

A fan asked if Bendis thought Superman or Clark Kent was the true identity. “It’s a very good question,” Bendis said. “What I am fascinated by, out of all he things in the world he could do, he chose to be a reporter. He didn’t have to have any secret identity. I think the reason he chose reporter is, because it’s the one thing he can do to serve justice that he can’t do as Superman. He can reveal truth. That’s Clark’s job.” Bendis said he’s going to strongly explore Clark Kent as an investigative reporter.

Sounds like Bendis has a good grasp of Superman/Clark Kent. Look forward to reading some great stories from him.

I’m very encouraged by what Bendis says here. His thoughts on Clark remind me of what Jerry Siegel did with Clark at the beginning. I definitely want to see Kal really fighting for truth and justice in both identities.

I think it’s generally more exciting when we can spend some time with him as Clark before he’s into action as Superman and have that contrast between his engaging with the ordinary world and his adventures as a superhero. But I do hope it doesn’t get used as an excuse to just have entire issues of people just sitting around with 9 panel grids of talking heads. Not that I want every issue to be all big beat em ups either.

Wow CBR actually had a report that wasn’t a rehash of something stupid.
