Brendan Fraser Recalls Almost Being Cast as Superman

Actor Brendan Fraser appeared on The Howard Stern Show where he discussed almost being cast to play Superman.

Back in 2002, J.J. Abrams had written a script titled “Superman: Flyby” which was in development at Warner Bros., with Brett Ratner hired as director. The film was eventually cancelled, reworked, with Bryan Singer coming on board to film “Superman Returns” instead.

Brendan Fraser recalls his failed audition to play Superman on film and why he wasn’t sure he actually wanted the part.

“Okay, say you do get the job to be the Man of Steel, it’s gonna be chipped on your gravestone,” said Fraser. “Are you okay with that? I mean, you will forever more be known as the Man of Steel.”

“I think inherently I didn’t want to be known for only one thing, because I’ve prided myself on diversity my whole professional life.”

The script for the un-made “Superman: Flyby” film by J.J. Abrams is available for download (4.6mb PDF).
