Even though 2006’s “Superman Returns” had its problems, fans were widely happy with Brandon Routh’s portrayal of the Man of Steel, and were extremely pleased to see the Iowa-born actor return to the blue tights and red cape in The CW’s “Crisis on Infinite Earths” TV crossover. In that story Routh took on the role of an older Superman who had experienced tragedy similar to the story told in 1997’s “Kingdom Come” Elseworlds comic book saga.
Unlike recent comic books and animated movies (such as “Injustice”), Routh’s “Kingdom Come” Superman had witnessed The Joker kill almost everyone at the Daily Planet in a gas attack, including Lois Lane. Instead of breaking under the stress, Routh’s Superman adopted a change to his costume’s color scheme to reflect his mourning, and fought on.
In an interview with ComicBook.com, Brandon Routh says that he is “absolutely” open to the idea of reprising the role of Superman, “given the story is the right story and Superman portrayed in the way that I see Superman. I was absolutely always interested in that. I have made my own investigations about the possibility of something like that. Right now, the truth is that we’re flush with Superman stuff, with the success of Superman & Lois – and Tyler’s doing an awesome job on that – and then there’s a couple scripts and stuff going around for features, I think, in different iterations at Warner Bros.”
With 2022’s “The Flash” movie opening up the possibilities that come with a Multiverse, there’s always the possibility of having multiple Supermen show up on the big screen.
“It’s hard to say what the next few years will bring, but where I used to say, I didn’t think I’d ever play Superman again, having been able to play him again in ‘Crisis,’ now I say, the sky’s the limit. Who knows?”
While he won’t be appearing as Superman any time soon, Routh is reprising his role as The Atom on the 5-part “Armageddon” crossover on The CW’s “The Flash”.
At a minimum they should have him guest in Superman and Lois ever so often (like they have with John Wesley Shipp on the Flash).
I’m totally 1000% behind that idea! Brandon’s Superman could mentor and help Tyler’s Superman from time to time. 😀
WB….. I’ve been asking this and I’ll keep asking. Please Please PLEASE, give Brandon Routh a Kingdom Come HBO Max series. I’ve said it many many many times already. Fans would love to see him back in the role. He loves and respects Superman. He gets Superman. He still looks like Superman. Brandon deserves another chance in the role. And by the looks of this article, he’s still very interested in playing Superman. Earlier last week Cavill talked about the multiverse. Routh talked about his time in Crisis as Superman. So how about a crossover film with Routh’s, Cavill’s, and… Read more »
To add to what I said earlier about the multiverse film idea, Routh talked about the multiverse. Cavill talked about the multiverse. So if two Superman actors are talking about the multiverse, then maybe this is a sign on what WB should do next for a Superman movie.
I meant to say “give us more of Brandon’s Superman.” not “gve us more of Brandon’s Superman.” I missed spelled give. Sorry about that. I should’ve proof read my sentence.
I sure hope that there will be a lot of comments about this article. The more we talk about Brandon Routh possibly coming back as Superman, the more of a chance I believe he’ll have at actually coming back. 🙂
CW should do some mini-series or TV movies. It would be awesome to see a 4 hour Routh Superman mini or a 2 hour Supergirl TV movie showing what all the characters are up to,
Spoiler Alert for last night’s Flash episode. Spoiler Alert for last night’s Flash episode. Spoiler Alert for last night’s Flash episode. I’m wondering if there’s something going on in the works that Brandon isn’t saying. I mean I saw part one of last night’s Flash crossover and there were at least two nods to Superman that Brandon made. The first being the iconic shirt rip, and the second being the word Kryptonite when he was talking about weaknesses. And now this interview that he did. Now it could just be what it most likely is, Brandon just saying that he’s… Read more »
I agree with Superman2878. WB needs to make a Brandon Routh “Kingdom Come” HBO Max series. Even though I’m a Henry Cavil fan through and through, I still think Brandon Routh is the most like Christopher Reeve and really embodies the total “Superman-look-and-character.” Additionally, Routh is still in good physical shape. So, I’m 100% behind Superman2878’s call for WB to make a Brand Routh “Kingdom Come” HBO Max series.
Exactly GodzillaofSteel! And also a crossover film. After seeing the new trailer for Spider-Man and also seeing the trailer for the Flash movie, I really do believe the best move that WB can make along with a Kingdom Come series is a Routh Superman,Cavill Superman,Hoechlin Superman Crossover film. And if they can, also a HBOmax Superman78 limited series starring Routh and Bitsy Tulloch after the comic is completed. They look remarkably like Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder. And when they were on screen together in Crisis, I couldn’t help but think “wow! It’s like watching Chris and Margot as Superman… Read more »
I wanted to add that Brandon has a huge advantage regarding his age and the version of Superman that he played in the Crisis On Infinite Earths crossover. That version of Superman was a version of the Kingdom Come Superman. A much older Superman. So I don’t see any issue or worry that Brandon is getting to old for the role. In fact it’s the opposite. He would be aging into the role. If I had to guess, the Kingdom Come Superman looks to be around mid 50’s to early 60’s, so time would be on Brandon’s side for the… Read more »
Yes!! BRANDON as Superman!!! LET’S GO!
Ha Ha after I wrote it I thought wait a second. I really do want Brandon to be Superman again LOL I didn’t think it would get taken down.
Wierd I can’t edit my old comments
Hey, which one did you want edited? I’ll be glad to help.
Also, we didn’t take down any of your comments, so if you posted one but don’t see it, it might be a technical glitch, feel free to post again. Being for or against Routh as Superman is nowhere NEAR a thing that’d get a comment removed. 🙂
But if they’re disappearing, we’d love to know and look into it. Thanks!
I thought the first comment had gotten taken down cause it disappeared. But then I realized it just got rearranged to the bottom of he screen after about 5 minutes.
Ah, cool. Yeah, there’s some weird stuff going on there. I had a similar problem a few weeks ago, which is frustrating when you’re trying to mod. Apologies. Yeah, as much as we’ve been “fire at will!” with deleting comments and banning folks lately with all the homophobia going around, it’s always the kind of thing that any reasonable person would know is inappropriate. But, and this goes for anyone, if folks feel like their comments were deleted sans reason, we do listen to appeals, if that should ever happen to you. In most cases. There are some comments that… Read more »
Ya know looking at the current results for this week’s voting poll, I’m so happy to see that Brandon is getting a lot of support for his Superman to have a series. I hope that WB/DC are taking notice on this week’s voting poll. 🙂
