
Screenwriter Ana Nogueira is bringing a darker, more complex version of the iconic hero to the big screen
Ana Nogueira, the writer behind DC Studios’ upcoming “Supergirl” film, has revealed how she cracked the character that never quite made sense to her before.
In an interview with Variety, Nogueira explained that she struggled to understand previous iterations of Supergirl, questioning how a character who witnessed Krypton’s complete destruction could be portrayed as so cheerful. However, when DC executives gave her Tom King’s comic books about Kara Zor-El, she found her way in through his “rougher and grittier and edgier and funnier” approach that embraced the character’s traumatic past.
“Supergirl,” directed by Craig Gillespie and starring Milly Alcock as Kara, will mark Nogueira’s first produced feature screenplay when it debuts in June 2026. She’s already expanding her DC work with adaptations of “Wonder Woman” and “Teen Titans” in development.
The project represents an unexpected turn for Nogueira, who initially envisioned herself as a romantic comedy writer but found genre work coming her way after her 2016 Off Broadway sci-fi play “Empathitrax.”
