A Look at the Visual Effects Behind “Superman & Lois” Season 3

Season 3 of “Superman & Lois” gave us a feast of great Superman moments, and the team at Refuge VFX has put together a Season 3 visual effects reel highlighting some of their work, including before and after breakdowns.

Stephen Lauser, who worked as a comp supervisor, but also helped out with lighting, previz, layout, and a little simulation, explains that the work was done in 3ds Max, Tyflow and Phoenix, and rendered in V-ray. “Nuke was used for compositing, and Unreal Engine was used for some environment rendering. Maya was used for animation of digi-doubles.”

“Having mostly full-CG shots for a lot of sequences was a big challenge because of how time-consuming building those environments can be. This also had to be achieved in a shorter time schedule than many of our other projects,” explains Lauser on his YouTube channel.
