September 2, 2010: "Smallville" Season 10 Official Description
The CW has released the official description for the 10th and final season of "Smallville".

The end of the beginning starts here. Taking flight in its tenth and final season, this modern retelling of a hero's legendary origins continues to blend realism, action, heart and humor as Clark Kent (Tom Welling) soars toward claiming his birthright.

Clark has emerged from his darkest hour, only to find the path to his destiny blocked by ghosts from the past - shadows in the present tempting Clark toward the darkness at every turn. Despite insurmountable odds, is Clark strong enough to step into the light and claim his rightful place as Earth's mightiest protector?

As "Smallville's" epic ninth season came to a close, General Zod (Callum Blue) and his Kryptonian Army declared war on the people of Earth. Clark prevented the deaths of thousands, if not millions of humans by using the Kryptonian Book of Rao to stop the attack. The spiritual tome opened a gateway to another world, one where Clark's people could exist in peace. One-by-one, every Kryptonian on Earth was propelled across the universe, but as Clark prepared for his "ascension," Zod refused to leave. Using a blue Kryptonite dagger to make himself human and avoid being sucked into space, Zod remained behind so that he could rule a world without its guardian, Clark Kent. Having no other option to rid the world of Zod's tyranny, Clark plunged the dagger into his own abdomen, protecting himself from ascension - and exiling Zod in the process. Though victorious, Clark's win was bittersweet as he plummeted off the building and into the darkness below.

With SUPERMAN: EARTH ONE, Straczynski and Davis inject the folk tale and legend that is Superman's origin with a modern, vital and forward-looking energy that makes for a refreshing, epic and challenging super-hero adventure.

In SUPERMAN: EARTH ONE - the first original graphic novel retelling Superman's origin - Clark Kent is a man looking for meaning in a new city and an age of failing newspapers, hand-held devices and instant gratification. But when you can fly through the sky and burn objects with a glance - things become a tad more complicated. Doubly so when a fleet of alien ships arrive on your doorstep.

SUPERMAN: EARTH ONE channels the best tales of Superman with a look toward the future, by two of the brightest talents the industry has to offer. We've got a first look at the graphic novel below. Prepare to be wowed.

September 1, 2010: Gary Frank "Superman: Secret Origin" Interview
ComicBookResources.com caught up with artist Gary Frank at the recent Fan Expo in Toronto, Canada and asked him about the 6-issue "Superman: Secret Origin" miniseries now that the final issue has shipped. Here's an excerpt from the interview...

Did you make subtle changes or nuances when drawing the pages and panels that featured Superman versus those that featured Clark Kent? And is that part of the fun, getting to draw both sides of the iconic character?

Completely. The eternal war which is raged on forums about whether Clark Kent is the real Superman or is Clark Kent a disguise is all rubbish. There is one character and there are different elements of this guy and in some circumstances, he will play up certain elements of his character for specific reasons but it doesn't mean that awkward Clark is a fake character. He's a guy that goes to a big city, he's grown up in the country, he works in a big office with office politics and back-biting and yeah, he can juggle tractors and things like that but that doesn't help you in that situation. To that extent, he is a fish out of water. He's nervous. The fact that he could demolish the Daily Planet building is irrelevant when you take the character out of context. He's never going to use any of his feats of strength against an ordinary person so how he's going to get confidence from that? He's still a fish out of water, he's still suffering the same problems that anybody gets in an environment with which they're not familiar.

Read the entire interview at the CBR website.
Interview Questions by Barry Freiman and Sam Rizzo

Lois Lane may have spent a night with Superman and admittedly gotten a terrific story out of it, but Ms. Lane's not the only reporter to get face-time with one of Smallville, Kansas's two most famous denizens. On Wednesday, August 18, 2010, I spent the afternoon at The Art Institute of Chicago with the actress who played the girl destined to go down in history as almost ending up with Superman, if it weren't for that pesky Lois Lane. Lana Lang, the red-headed girl next door to the Boy of Steel, in almost every version of continuity always a bridesmaid and never a bride. A reunion with Lana Lang, now that's a terrific story.

From 1988 to 1992, Stacy Haiduk, 42, played Lana for four seasons and 100 episodes of "Superboy: The TV Series" (aka "The Adventures of Superboy"). Haiduk has everything someone who used to grab the Boy of Steel's attention should have - she's gorgeous, funny, talented, smart, sensitive, and, as hinted by the red hair, a bit quirky. Wig and no wig, she was Ron Weasley before Ron Weasley - or perhaps with just enough Hermione to counteract the weirds.

As the only original cast member to remain with the show for its entire run, audiences saw Lana's complete arc from college co-ed to investigator. That's why, to compare Haiduk's Lana to the Lanas played since by actress Kristin Kreuk, who played Lana Lang on "Smallville", and before by Annette O'Toole, who played a single Mom Lana in "Superman III", it's much easier to see not only what attracted Superboy to her but why audiences never felt sorry for Haiduk's Lana. It was always pretty clear in Haiduk's performance that this Lana Lang would survive, even thrive, sans Boy of Steel.

Scott Cranford, the man who was the official town Superman for the Metropolis, Illinois Superman Celebration for seven years, has put together Heroic Ambition, a DVD documentary about the Superman Celebration and his experience playing Superman.

The 55 minute documentary is expertly put together, and includes many great interviews with everyone from the mayor of Metropolis through to the fans that attend the celebration.

The film was written and directed by Scott Cranford, founder of HeroicAmbition.com and former official "Superman" of Metropolis, Illinois. Using character types found in the world of Superman, Cranford has created a film that gives an entertaining and revealing look behind one of the biggest superhero entertainment events in the country.

Anyone who has visited or is thinking of visiting Metropolis, Illinois for the annual Superman Celebration will want to buy this DVD. It not only gives you a behind the scenes look at what goes into making the celebration the success that it is, but it also gives you the history of the celebration, how far it's come, and ideas for making it bigger and better in future years.

Throughout the documentary Scott's own personal involvement is heavily examined, from the story behind his selection for the role of Superman, getting married during the celebration, through to his final year as Superman. Scott's personal goals for teaching children what it really means to be a hero are also examined, and his efforts are truly inspiring.

Heroic Ambition is a DVD that should be in every Superman fan's collection.
August 31, 2010: Fredric Wertham's Papers Now Available to Public

In the 1940s comic books faced no bigger villain than Dr. Fredric Wertham, whose public outcry against comics, including Superman, saw many books banned from homes across America by concerned parents. Wertham's papers are now being made available to the public via the Library of Congress. Here's an excerpt from an article published by the Library...

Among comic-book aficionados, psychiatrist Fredric Wertham (1895-1981) is considered as much of a villain as those he assailed in the crime and horror comics he criticized. However, Wertham was more than just an outspoken crusader against comic books. He was dedicated to protecting children from harmful material in all mass media. His research about the detrimental effects of segregation was used in the landmark Brown v. Board of Education court case. In addition, Wertham founded a clinic in Harlem, providing mental-health services to the underprivileged African American community.

The Library of Congress acquired his papers in 1987, through the estate of his wife, Florence Hesketh Wertham. In May of this year, all 222 containers were opened to public research access. Previously, they were sealed except to people approved by the estate.

You can read the complete article at the Library of Congress blog site.
Superman, Batman, Charlie Chaplin, Darth Vader and many others marched on City Hall in Los Angeles today to protest the LAPD ban on costumed characters appearing outside Graiman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood.

August 29, 2010: DC Nation Panel at Baltimore Comic-Con
The low-key DC Nation panel at the 2010 Baltimore Comic-Con this weekend saw artist Shane Davis give some details regarding the progress of the up-coming "Superman: Earth One" original graphic novel. Here's an excerpt from the ComicBookResources.com report...

Shane Davis has finished work on "Superman: Earth One" with J. Michael Straczynski. Advance black and white copies are floating around the DC offices, featuring a story that panelists described as "an amazing way to reinterpret the character."

Davis shared that "Superman: The Movie" director Richard Donner has said of the book that he "believes every word of it." It's a look at Clark Kent as a 21-year-old out in the world. Davis used for reference buildings from all around the planet, striving to make Metropolis truly appear as a metropolis - a crossroads of countries.

"Like EPCOT!" Palmiotti chimed in, which got quite a chuckle from the assembled fans.

It was explained that "Earth One" is not so much a retelling of the origin of Superman as much as it is an investigation of an experience in his life that maybe hasn't been investigated clearly before. Sattler said he read it once to be able to write the DC Nation piece about it, but he was so compelled that he wanted to read it again.

It was also revealed that Supergirl will team-up with the Legion of Superheroes in her own title in the months to come, followed by a 2-part Cat Grant story involving the Toyman.

August 29, 2010: Eddie Berganza Leaving "Superman/Batman"

Long-time friend of the Superman Homepage, Eddie Berganza is stepping down as Editor of the "Superman/Batman" title with issue #78, handing over the reigns to Matt Idelson.

Over at DC's "The Source" Eddie lists the group of talented creative people who got together for the special issue #75...

For S/B#75 it was awesome putting together the list of attendees.

Paul Levitz and Jerry Ordway were the opening act, and they were having the Legion finally team-up with Batman!

Then the ever effervescent Steve Seagle got together with Teddy Kristiansen to give me a means to bring the rest of my crazy idea of 2-pagers that would honor our World's Finest-that it's the only sequel to his acclaimed graphic novel IT'S A BIRD, is just a bonus.

Billy Tucci was dealing with some real world things, but was a total pro in bringing in the aspect of this biz that makes it so great-the escape our imagination brings us, young and old.

When I asked Adam Hughes to participate, I honestly thought he would be too busy, but he did it, and he brought Supergirl and Batgirl with him. I could not have been happier.

J.T. Krul and Francis Manapul made me smile with their teenage troubles. Francis did such an amazing job that I decided to keep it as he had done it without any extra color.

Jill Thompson finally got to do some DCU stuff! Yeah!!

August 29, 2010: Gary Frank Talks "Superman: Secret Origin"
Speaking at the Toronto Fan Expo, Gary Frank told fans that the recently complete "Superman: Secret Origin" 6-issue miniseries, while not necessarily "new and different", was a story he and Geoff Johns wanted to do.

"It was just kind of condensing the things that were important to Geoff and I in terms of what we felt captured Superman best and resonated with us," said Frank. "We were just trying to do a distilled version of that. The whole thing was to re-examine the origin and the development of the character while having everything feeling slightly familiar but without necessarily repeating events that we've seen 200 times before. We didn't want to introduce something kind of massively out of left field or then we'd feel that it wasn't necessarily consistent with what had happened to Superman."

Welcome to the 64th episode of From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast! This podcast has a simple premise; examine just about every Superman comic published between Man of Steel #1 in 1986 to Adventures of Superman #649 in 2006 in an informative and hopefully entertaining format.

Part index. Part commentary. Part history lesson. All podcast.

This time out Mike and Jeff finally get around to covering the WORLD'S FINEST mini-series from 1990 and the final result is...well, the final result is a bit more casual than the usual episode of this show. Sure they talk about the story and the art and the whole Batman and Superman trading cities thing. They also discuss why they really didn't like the series all that much. In between all of that, though, they go on a number of digressions that go all over the map and generally have more fun than should be allowed.

Next Week: The Sinbad Contract. Jeff and Mike have a lot of good things to say about this one.

You can subscribe to the show in two ways. First there is the RSS Feed and there is also the iTunes link.
August 27, 2010: International Read Comics in Public Day

The Nashua Telegraph reports today that tomorrow, August 28th, is International Read Comics in Public Day.

From the site:

On International Read Comics in Public Day, spend an hour or two reading comic books in a public setting. Grab a classic issue of Superman or an obscure work by your favorite alternative comic artist and read it at a coffee shop, the bus stop, the front steps of the library - wherever you feel you’ll get the most visibility.

If anyone gives you a strange look or asks you what you’re reading, tell them it’s a comic book. Under normal circumstances, “graphic novel” is an acceptable substitute, but on International Read Comics in Public Day, you’re encouraged to eschew this switcheroo. Today, it’s just a comic book, plain and simple.

Consider bringing a few extras with you. After you’ve shared the joy of comic books with inquisitive bystanders, they may be interested in experiencing it (or in many cases, re-experiencing it) for themselves. Many people pack their comics away once they “grow up,” but that doesn’t mean the characters, the stories, the art form as a whole no longer resonates with them.

The Superman Homepage encourages you to get out there with a few copies of your favorite Superman comic and have a blast!

By Barry Freiman

Summer dreams ripped at the seams, but ohhhhh, those Su-mmer Ni-iiiights. Tell me more, tell me morrre. As if I have to tell you that’s from “Grease” starring Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta. Gotta go back, back, back to school again, oooh oh I gotta go back to school. Well, I don’t but my daughter does. And this time she’s a senior and she’s gonna rule the school. The back to school riff is from “Grease 2” and I probably did need to tell most of you that. What do “Grease” and “Grease 2” have to do with Superman? Well think about it.

In “Grease", Sandy has two identities, one that is meek and mild mannered and the other wears spandex. When Sandy recreates herself at the film’s climax, it’s as a super-heroic version of herself, someone with a sense of the sensual but still retaining an innocent charm. And in “Grease 2”, the heroic allusions of a secret identity are so obvious that at one point Sandy’s cousin (cousin being the catch-all comic book relation like Superman and Supergirl) says to Michelle Pfeiffer (in her first role) “Did you, have you ever read a Superman comic?” as an opening line to try to tell her he has two identities.

As if that’s not enough of a tie between the number one ranked movie musical of all time and the number one comic book character of all time, there’s actress Maureen Teefy who, in “Grease 2”, plays one of the Pink Ladies. Then two years later, she’s the first live action Lucy Lane in 1984’s “Supergirl”. Sandy and Superman have more in common than you might think.

Oh and one more thing, both “Grease” and “Superman” were released in 1978.

With summer’s end, it seems a nice change from starting off with more of the unending “Smallville” casting noise to discuss a seemingly random – but not random – tidbit from pop culture. Imagine how both films would have been so different had actress Stockard Channing won the role of Lois Lane in “Superman”, which “Superman” director Dick Donner explains on the DVD she had been their favorite Lois after Margot Kidder. What if she had played Lois Lane to the exclusion of Betty Rizzo? Lois would be strong and tough and definitely not lilting around after Superman. Had Rizzo been Lois, There’d be worse things she could do than go with a Super Man or two or maybe she’d just think it a test whether he could read her mind.

The bulk of the “Smallville” news always comes after Comic-Con (until next year when it’ll just be gone); in this last season where there just doesn’t seem to be a leisurely pace to slow down to, I could miss out on some of the pure gee whiz factor behind the show reaching its culmination.

This certainly happened to me in 2006 when Warners released “Superman Returns”. I was so invested in “Returns” and I was literally a part of the machinery that promoted the movie, I couldn’t watch it with the fire of a fanboy. I knew too much. Am I heading down that same primrose laden path – but on TV? Possibly. But it’s worth it given what “Smallville” has afforded me. My very first article for the Superman Homepage was about the first season finale nine years ago.

Now let’s talk TV.

The “Smallville” season 10 premiere, “Lazarus”, airs Friday, September 24, 2010 at 8 PM. However, this week, “Smallville” rerun “Salvation”, the ninth season finale, airs Friday at 8 PM on the CW. “Smallville” repeats also air three hours each and every weekday on HD-Net.
Seeing as the Superman Homepage is and remains a family friendly website, where cursing and other things are kept to the barest of minimums, I now struggle with one of the most difficult pieces of news I've ever had to put in the site.

Today something was announced that I can't properly touch upon without accruing spontaneous emissions of anger and misconstrued moaning from our more sensitive readers.

To that end, I am going to now refer you to the "read more" below, and if you indicate with your pointer that this is where you want to go, you will be affirming, firstly, that you are wanting to read a story item about a mature concept that may be deigned offensive, and secondly, that you don't hold this page liable for what you're going to read.

Comments are also disabled, for obvious reasons, and no commenting on this will be allowed below other stories. The choice to read this story is yours and yours alone. Any mention of it on other comments boards is RIGHT OUT.

The reason we are posting this news item is because it is so broadly relevant to the community at large that it would be a disservice not to show what we've got. With that in mind, click below at your own peril... or don't. I really advise you don't. So does Steve.

In fact, forget I even wrote this.

Voices From Krypton has an interview with Ed Asner, the voice of Granny Goodness in the upcoming "Superman/Batman: Apocalypse". Asner previously voiced Granny in "Superman: The Animated Series", "Justice League", and "Justice League Unlimited". Asner is best known for playing Lou Grant on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" (and "Rhoda") and on "Lou Grant". He has won more acting Emmys than any other actor (seven total) and is the only actor to win an Emmy for the same role in comedy and drama. Asner explains in the interview why he enjoys doing cartoon voice work:

It’s always a trip a joyful trip to come into the studio, and especially working with this group. Andrea (Romano) is a delight to work with, and Bruce (Timm) knows this genre better than anybody. Plus, it’s the ability to let your imagination take flight – to take chances, to plunge and to soar. That’s something you don’t get to do as an actor. You get to do it as a kid. So I grab the opportunity as often as I can.

August 26, 2010: "Smallville" Episodes Air in Canada This Fall & Australia Next Year
New episodes of "Smallville" will air on Canadian Superstation CHCH beginning this Fall. According to The Hollywood Reporter:

The return to U.S. primetime follows CHCH last year being acquired by indie broadcaster Channel Zero from a struggling Canwest Global Communications Corp.

Channel Zero immediately ditched expensive U.S. series from the station's schedule, including a slate of E! Entertainment-branded shows, and went instead with a rolling news format by day, and movies at night and on weekends.

But Channel Zero emerged as a buyer of U.S. series at the Los Angeles Screenings as it put together an upcoming fall/winter schedule to entice advertisers and audiences.

In Canada, the final season of "Smallville" premieres on Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at 10 PM.

Additionally, The Hollywood Reporter reports that new Australian Channel ELEVEN will air first-run episodes of "Smallville" beginning next year.

The new issue of TV Guide has "Smallville" Producer Kelly Souders revealing that the season premiere of "Smallville", "Lazarus", will end with a twist. The final scenes will force Clark to re-examine his recent actions:

"[The twist] rocks [Clark's] world and sends him on a different trajectory," she explained. "He realizes that he's not the guy that everybody looks to when they think of Superman."

She added that the character will struggle to become "an inspirational totally pure-hearted guy" as the season progresses.

"That's not who Clark Kent is right now, and that becomes very clear to him," she revealed.

August 24, 2010: The Brave and The Bold on CBR

Sholly Fisch did an interview with CBR for an interview regarding the upcoming Brave and the Bold comic relaunch. Many things were discussed, including some items relevant to Superman fans:

It's been revealed that your first two issues will feature Superman and Captain Marvel!, certainly two of DC's most powerful superheroes. Can you share any details about the stories in terms of what threat they're up against and why Batman needed to tap into these two specific superpowers to have justice served? And can you tease which other superheroes we'll see featured in the months ahead? OK. I'll admit it. I really want to know is when we'll see Aquaman because in our house, he was our favorite character during your run on "Super Friends.

Sure. No plans for Aquaman to show up immediately, I'm afraid. But I did stick him in a Batman costume a few months ago, before the relaunch, and I also have an idea for a nifty little underwater story a little further down the line.

In general, I'm trying to find stories and angles that we haven't seen too many times before, especially when it's a hero who has a lot of history with Batman, like Superman. In the first issue, Superman pulls Batman in to help him solve a mystery – but it's a mystery inside the Bottle City of Kandor. The second issue is our holiday issue, with Batman and Captain Marvel trying to free Gotham from the grip of the Psycho-Pirate's 'holiday spirit.' After that, we've got things like the Mad Hatter and Mirror Master teaming up to drag Batman and Flash through the looking glass. Not to mention Batman and Wonder Woman – married!
For the rest of the interview, click here!
Holy Moley! Ausiello TV over at EW.com has a surprising revelation for "Smallville" fans. On the upcoming season 10 episode "Isis", Erica Durance will play the character of the same name from the DCU. O Mighty Isis first appeared on "The Secrets of Isis" as a spin-off of the 1970's "Shazam!" live-action television show. There her secret identity was school teacher Andrea Thomas played by actress JoAnna Cameron. The show aired from 1975 to 1977 on CBS. Erica Durance, Lois Lane on "Smallville", will play Isis on the show -- whether we're talking possession or a body double remains to be seen. The name "Isis" isn't a new one to "Smallville" -- it is also the name of the Foundation set up by Lana Lang and later run by Chloe Sullivan devoted to helping meteor freaks of the non-homicidal variety. Watch the Ausiello TV segment here.

August 24, 2010: Interview with "Young Justice" Cartoon Series Creators

Comic Book Movies has an interview with the creators behind the upcoming new animated series "Young Justice", Greg Weisman and Brandon Vieti. In the interview, the creators explain who they chose for their cast of young heroes, which mentors will have particularly large and regular roles on the show, and the general tone and look of the show.

Superboy (Conner Kent) is described as literally being a newbie -- he was cloned only 16 weeks ago though he acts like a 16 year old teenager. They also are asked about his genetic makeup and the Producers decline to comment whether or not he'll have the combined genetic makeup of Lex Luthor and Superman -- though his origins will be explored on the show. Both Superboy and Superman will be voiced by actor Nolan North.

The remainder of the team is comprised of Robin (Dick Grayson), Kid Flash (Wally West), Miss Martian (The Martian Manhunter's daughter), Artemis (unkown though she is based on an existing DCU character), and the new Aqualad (the son of Aqua-rogue Black Manta). Original Aqualad Garth will appear as well. Another hero appearing often will be the Big Red Cheese, Captain Marvel, voiced by Rob Lowe. Many assignments will come from Red Tornado and Batman (voiced by Bruce Greenwood reprising the role from "Batman: Under the Red Hood").

Superman is described as having a "large role" on the show along with other members of the Justice League. The series is set in continuity on Earth-16 in the new 52-Earth Multiverse. The series tone will not be as light as "Teen Titans" nor as straight-up serious as "Justice League"/"Justice League Unlimited". Look for "Young Justice" to debut on Cartoon Network this November. And read the entire interview over at Comic Book Movies.

August 23, 2010: Allison Mack To Appear in Five Episodes of Season 10 as Chloe

The New York Post is reporting that Allison Mack is preparing to say farewell to the character of Chloe Sullivan after a stint on Broadway. In the interview with Sullivan, 28, she reveals that Chloe will appear in a total of five episodes throughout season 10. When asked about how she'd like to see her character's arc ended, Sullivan said:

Just that she maintains her integrity. That she really upholds what is important to her and doesn’t sacrifice anyone. I spent a lot of time playing a character who gives up a lot of the things that are most important to her, for the sake of other people. I think she’s finally reached a point in her own maturation process where she doesn’t do that anymore. I hope the writers maintain that standard as we end her run.

August 23, 2010: Laura Vandervoort to Become Supergirl on "Smallville"

In addition, she will don brunette wig and glasses to portray Suprgirl's alter ego. According to TV Guide.com:

"You really see her as Supergirl," says exec producer Kelly Souders. "Not the whole outfit, but her wardrobe will have evolved even a little more than Clark's. She's less Kara and way more Supergirl." Watch for Kara to don her new look for a photo shoot after she becomes a media darling following a heroic save that reveals her flying capabilities to the world. To protect her superhero identity, "You'll see Kara in the [brunette] wig and glasses [as] a bit of an homage to her other identity from the comics, Linda Lee Danvers," Laura says.

Might Clark be inspired to further define his own blurred personas? Souders hints, "Kara has a lot of input down the road in Clark's transformation into Superman."

August 23, 2010: "Superman II" Director Richard Lester Donates Archive to British Film Institute

Richard Lester, the Director of record on the theatrical version of "Superman II" (1980) and the Director of "Superman III" (1983), has donated his archive to the British Filim Institute. The BFI National Archive yesterday announced that it had acquired more than 60 boxes of letters, scripts, notes, receipts and photographs covering Lester's 40 year career in the TV and movie business. Lester, 78, retired from film-making after an actor died during the filming of "The Return of the Musketeers".

Lester rarely speaks about his work on the Superman franchise so it should be interesting to see what items are included among the donation regarding "Superman II" and "Superman III". Read the source article
August 21, 2010: Building Featured on "Smallville" Suffers Fire
Downtown Smallville, Kansas almost suffered a fatal blow the likes of which hasn't been seen since the town was devastated by two meteor showers. On Friday morning, a fire almost destroyed the 102-year-old Coldwater Hotel in downtown Merritt, 270 kilometres northeast of Vancouver, British Columbia. The fire broke out in a suite in the hotel. The building is seen weekly on "Smallville". Its copper dome is featured in the opening credits of "Smallville" and some of the "main street" scenes of the fictitious community are filmed in Merritt. Thankfully an in-room sprinkler system doused the flames before the fire spread. Read about it right here.

“Smallville” keeps the fan interest this week with the announcement that actor John Glover will be reprising his role as Lionel Luthor for at least two episodes this year. Those who attended San Diego Comic-Con in July first saw Glover in the trailer for Season 10 of the show and now his role has been confirmed. Of course he could turn out to be Henry Lionel Luthor . . . .

The “Smallville” season 10 premiere, “Lazarus”, airs Friday, September 24, 2010 at 8 PM. “Smallville” repeats air three hours each and every weekday on HD-Net.

2006’s “Superman Returns” airs Sunday at 3 PM on AMC.

In 1957, Superman bedeviled more than just one redhead. There was Lana Lang, his teenage sweetheart always out to find his secret identity; actress Noel Neill’s Lois Lane on “The Adventures of Superman” who developed into a redhead; and finally there was the woman we all loved, Lucy. On “I Love Lucy” episode “Lucy and Superman”, it’s Little Ricky’s birthday party and Superman’s in town so Lucy asks Ricky to get Superman to attend. Unfortunately he’s off to Terre Haute, Indiana so Lucy has an idea. George Reeves plays Superman – not George Reeves playing Superman but Superman as the character. Aunt Harriet on Batman also appears as a nervous prospective tenant for the Mertzes. “I Love Lucy” airs Monday at 2:30 AM and 12:30 PM on Hallmark.
August 20, 2010: Superman Visits Cincinnati

WLWT and Cincinnati.com report on Superman's continued walk across the United States, more specifically his stop in Cincinnati.

Cincinnati.com reports:

Cincinnati is the third stop on Superman’s walking tour of the nation, after Philadelphia and Detroit, in a new storyline titled “Grounded.” In the 12-issue series, Superman attempts to reconnect with his adopted home and the people who inhabit it.

DC held a contest for Superman fans to nominate a city for inclusion in the “Grounded” storyline, but it’s not clear whether DC writers had already planned to include Cincinnati in the series or whether they chose it because readers campaigned for Cincinnati.
For more, visit WLWT or Cincinnati.com.

August 20, 2010: Talia Thelen Talks "Superman: The Unofficial Web Series"
The Superman Homepage's Noah Runzo grabbed a quick interview with Talia Thelen, the actress who plays Lois Lane in the fan-made "Superman: The Unofficial Web Series".

Noah Runzo: Lois Lane. Big shoes to fill. Give me your take on what you bring to her character that is new and also recognizable to the fans.

Talia Thelen: I think I show a very different side of Lois. In this day and age we see many women trying to make it in a "man's" world. As a career woman I think my Lois is much more driven than others I've seen. For her it's not just about trying to get that story but trying to get that Pulitzer, trying to make a lasting affect on the world around her. I feel like other variations on Lois have focused strongly on her ties to Superman where our Lois has her own hopes, dreams, and goals totally autonomous from him. Although Superman is one of her main interests I think the fans appreciate that Lois is very much a modern independent woman. I do love that during the last few episodes the fans have gotten to see a softer side of Lois in Smallville and in her scene with Superman. I still say that underneath it all she genuinely cares about Jimmy, Perry, and the people affected by the stories she is writing.

NR: Tell me about your audition. How did you prepare for the character?

Talia: I did a lot of research before and after my audition. I read a lot of comic books! Not a bad thing to have to do? I tried to take every assumption about Lois that I've ever had and toss them out the window and treat her like any other character. Look at what the circumstances she is living in and where she came from. This Lois focuses heavily on her history, the fact that she's a general's daughter and grew up in a military family, etc.
August 20, 2010: Lionel Luthor Returns to "Smallville" For At Least 2 Episodes
John Glover, the actor who played Lionel Luthor through seventh season episode "Descent", is returning to play Lionel for at least two episodes beginning this November, according to the Ausiello Files at Entertainment Weekly. In "Descent", Lex's father took a huge leap, to his death, that is, when Lex pushed dear old Dad out of the window at LuthorCorp.

It was already assumed by many fans that Glover would be reprising his role as Lionel Luthor when he was featured in the San Diego Comic-Con trailer for the 10th season. Welcome to the 63rd episode of From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast! This podcast has a simple premise; examine just about every Superman comic published between Man of Steel #1 in 1986 to Adventures of Superman #649 in 2006 in an informative and hopefully entertaining format.

Part index. Part commentary. Part history lesson. All podcast.

This week Mike and Jeff have something special for you. Instead of covering the WORLD’S FINEST mini-series like they’ve been promising for a few weeks now the boys decided to release the interview they conducted a few weeks ago with the one, the only, DAN JURGENS! Jeff and Mike “sat down” with him for a little over an hour and had a fun and informative conversation. Topics include how Dan got sucked into the world of comics, the behind the scenes origin for Booster Gold, the early days of Dan working on Superman, destructible cape vs. indestructible cape, Day of the Krypton Man, Lobo, Soul Search, Krisis of the Krimson Kryptonite and the shocking truth behind why all of the cab rides in Metropolis were $6.50.

Mike and Jeff would like to thank Dan for being very generous with his time. They hope to have him back soon.

Next Week: Batman and Superman team up in the WORLD’S FINEST mini-series. For reals this time. No seriously. They aren’t putting it or THE SINBAD CONTRACT off at all. They promise.

You can subscribe to the show in two ways. First there is the RSS Feed and there is also the iTunes link.
August 19, 2010: WGTD 91.1 Players Adapt Superman and Batman

The Journal Times reports today that local Radio Theater's 91.1 Players are planning on doing "Superman" and "Batman" programs, if you're a local to Kenosha, Wisconsin.

This story, which covers the event, tells more about the nature of the performance:

WGTD Radio Theater’s co-executive producers, Steve Brown and Mike Ullstrup, wrote the pair of new radio plays with the style and sound of the television series, based on the DC Comics books of the same name.

“I can’t imagine a TV show that better illustrates the fantasy world of the super hero than ‘Superman,’ which premiered back in 1952 and ended in 1958,” said Brown. “It didn’t use lots of high level special effects. Rather, it relied on well-crafted storylines. George Reeves starred as ‘Superman,’ and built the whole ‘franchise’ all over again, after it had been highly successful on the radio back in the 1940s. Maybe the scripts were not very sophisticated, but I remember watching the show and loved the stories and how they really dragged me into the program.”
Ullstrup said “Batman” was one of those classic TV shows that was “so ‘campy’ that it was funny, it totally captivated the TV viewing audience.”

“The music, the ‘pows,’ ‘bams,’ and ‘zonks,’ were all part of what made Batman and Robin come alive — almost jumping out of the TV set,” said Ullstrup.

The two productions will be directed by the veteran 91.1 Players member Vittoria DuMez, who will also be an actress in the shows.
If anyone who visits the site goes to see the show, the Superman Homepage would love to have a write-up!

By Barry Freiman
I had the great pleasure yesterday, August 18, 2010, of interviewing Stacy Haiduk, Lana Lang on the 1988-1992 television series “The Adventures of Superboy”. The interview will be appearing soon on both the Superman Homepage and the Superboy Homepage. We spoke at length about her time on “Superboy” as the only cast member to remain with the series for its entire four-season run. Stacy was still a teenager when she got the role of Lana Lang. We met while she was here in Chicago filming an episode of “Ride-Along” for Fox-TV.

After the interview on an outside patio at the Chicago Institute of Art, Stacy and I spent several more hours talking informally. It was during this time I asked if she’d be willing to film a brief greeting to the members of the Superman and Superboy Homepages. Yes it is true – I directed Stacy Haiduk in a brief scene. As you can probably tell, we did this in one take.

Stay tuned to the Superman Homepage in the days to come for the full interview with photographs. Thanks to Sam Rizzo the owner and editor in chief of the Superboy Homepage for setting the interview up when he was unable to get off work himself to interview her.
August 17, 2010: "Smallville" Casts Desaad and Gordon Godfrey
As most "Smallville" fans know, the principle villain for the tenth and final season will be Darkseid. While the Producers have said Darkseid will not appear in person right away, his minions, the New Gods of Apokolips, will. MTV.com is reporting that two of Darkseid's minions have now been cast: Desaad and G. Gordon Godfrey.

Steve Byers has been cast as Desaad. Desaad is Darkseid's key lackey from the original New Gods stories by Jack "King" Kirby. Byers is perhaps best known for his roles in "Falcon Beach" and "Wild Roses." He has also appeared on "CSI: Miami," "The Dresden Files" and "Mutant X."

Michael Daingerfield has been cast as G. Gordon Godfrey. Godfrey was a key player in the first company-wide crossover following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, Legends. Daingerfield previously guest starred on "Smallville" in the third season episode "Shattered" as an assassin. He also voiced the role of Superman on the first episode of "Krypto the Super Dog", "Krypto's Scrypto".

Desaad and Godfrey both debut during the upcoming season's third episode, "Supergirl", which also features the return of Laura Vandervoort as the Girl of Steel.

August 17, 2010: Edmonton Actor, Model & Fanboy Gets "Smallville" Role

Ron Wear, Mr. World Canada, has secured a supporting role on two upcoming episodes of "Smallville", according to an article in the Edmonton Sun. Born and raised in Edmonton, Wear is a fashion model. Though he's mum on details, he appears in two Season 10 episodes and has scenes with Supergirl, played by Laura Vandervoort.

Wear, 31, professes to be a "fanboy" and, while we have all heard actors make that claim before, Wear wears a Green Lantern suit in a photo on his Facebook page. The article in the Edmonton Sun discusses his excitement over the "Smallville" experience:

While on set last month, Wear met Tom Welling -- better known as Superman (Clark Kent). He said Welling is private and mostly keeps to himself, but is a nice guy.

“It was cool to meet him. I am a fanboy of Superman,” said Wear, who represents Canada in the male version of Miss World.

Wear said he must have made an impression because he was asked to return to the Burnaby set next Monday for the filming of another episode.

He can’t share much about his role in season 10 -- the final season -- because he is sworn to secrecy, Wear said.

But he did say he is in scenes with one of the main characters, Supergirl played by Laura Vandervoort.

“It was kind of nerve-wracking,” said Wear. “But it’s so much fun to interact with other people and see the finished product after wards.”

Check out the Edmonton Sun piece here.

August 16, 2010: Lawyer Behind Siegel/Shuster Lawsuit Sued
Many sources across the internet are now reporting on the impending suit against Marc Toberoff, infamous lawyer to the Siegel and Shuster families in their quest to gain control over the Superman copyright.

In May, a suit was filed against Toberoff and his clients, accusing him of souring relationships with the heirs in order to gain Superman copyright control.

Variety reports:

Toberoff's attorney, Richard Kendall, filed motions on Friday in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles seeking to dismiss the suit. Among other things, he cited protections from California's "anti-SLAPP" laws, designed to curb lawsuits filed with the intention of intimidating the opposition by delay and legal expense. (SLAPP stands for "strategic lawsuit against public participation").

DC Comics and Warner Bros. stand to lose a great degree of control over Superman in 2013, putting in doubt their ability to exploit the character onscreen and in a host of other projects.

A provision of the Copyright Act allows creators and their heirs and estates to recapture their creations under certain circumstances, regardless of whether the rights were signed away in prior agreements.

With two U.S. District Court decisions in 2008 and 2009, Toberoff successfully recaptured key portions of the "Superman" storyline for the Siegel heirs. Toberoff also represents Shuster's nephew, Mark Warren Peary, executor of the Shuster estate, which is seeking to recapture the other half of the rights in 2013.

"The transparent purpose of DC's lawsuit against Mr. Toberoff is to re-litigate the issues that DC has already lost, disrupt the relationship between Mr. Toberoff and his clients, and delay the final reckoning between DC and Mr. Toberoff's clients," Toberoff's attorneys wrote in their motions.

DC Comics, represented by Daniel Petrocelli, in May accused Toberoff of having an ulterior motive that went beyond legal representation and claimed that he had wrested a 47.5% stake in the heirs' claimed rights, while the Siegel heirs get 27.5% and the Shuster estate gets 25%.

The suit accuses Toberoff of preventing the Siegel and Shuster heirs "from freely entering into agreements with DC Comics -- even if it was in their respective economic interest to do so."
But in his filings, Toberoff said that, for at least the past five years, he has only been on retainer with the Siegel heirs and Shuster's executor.

According to Toberoff, the Siegel heirs in October 2002 did enter into an agreement with IP Worldwide, a joint venture he formed with Endeavor partner Ari Emanuel for the purpose of acquiring and packaging intellectual property rights. But that agreement expired in 2005.

And in 2001, Toberoff's "loan-out" company, Pacific Pictures Corp., entered into an agreement with Peary and Shuster's sister, Jean Peavy, to retrieve, enforce and exploit Shuster's creations. But those agreements were cancelled in 2004.
Variety's website requires you to sign up to view the rest of the article, which can be found here.

Also reporting on the suit are IGN and the New York Times.

August 16, 2010: Fan-Made Superman Prototype Suit

In the wake of rumors and a lack of palpable, concrete news surrounding the new Superman movie, fan speculation abounds.

Today, the Superman Homepage received the following letter from Jon Quackenbush, of a fan group on Superhero Hype, asking if we could share a prototype design for a Superman suit.

While normally (for copyright and sheer volume of requests) we don't share fan fiction or fan created editions, we've decided to make an exception in this case, given the sheer amount of work that obviously went into this piece.

Feel free to discuss, but remember, KEEP IT CIVIL, or the comments will be closed.
August 16, 2010: Superheroes as Bad Role Models?

Sharon Lamb, a child psychologist from the University of Massachusetts, has recently decried certain superheroes as bad role models for a generation of young boys.

The Guardian reports on her findings, citing her claim that modern heroes "exploit women, flaunt bling, and convey their manhood with high-powered guns."

"There is a big difference in the movie superhero of today and the comic book superhero of yesterday," she said.

"Today's superhero is too much like an action hero who participates in non-stop violence; he's aggressive, sarcastic, and rarely speaks to the virtue of doing good for humanity," she said.
Superman, however, is immune from her critique. Lamb believes Superman stands for justice, fairness, and decency, but at the same time, the article uses the past tense, saying he "stood" for these things, perhaps indicating a lack of modern relevance.

She goes on, again asserting the past tense, to assert:

...the boys could look up to the old-style heroes such as Superman, "because outside of their costumes they were real people with real problems and many vulnerabilities".Lamb told the Annual Convention of the American Psychological Association in San Diego, California that adolescent boys were being sold a "narrow version of masculinity" just when they were most vulnerable and trying to forge an identity for themselves.
An audio interview with Lamb on Science Weekly, conducted on Skype, is available at this link. Skip to the 27:20 mark to hear Lamb's remarks about her theories.

August 14, 2010: LA Times Interview with Grant Morrison

The Los Angeles Times Entertainment Section has a two-part interview with DC writer Grant Morrison (Final Crisis, All-Star Superman). Part two of the interview has Morrison comparing and contrasting Superman and Batman after having written both characters:

Superman is very bright and optimistic. It's all the simple things. He's of the day and of the sunlight, and Batman is the creature of the night. I'm interested in the fact that they both believe in the same kind of things. But Batman is better. He's screwed up. That what makes him cool. . . .

Bruce Wayne is a rich man. He's an artistocrat. Superman grew up as Clark Kent on a farm bailing hay, and he's got a boss that shouts at him if he's late to work. He's actually more human; Batman is the fetish fantasy psyche of the aristocrat overlord who can do anything he wants, and that's fascinating. The class difference between the two of them is important.

Read the entire interview here.
By Barry Freiman

“Smallville” this week announced that Michael Ironside and Peyton List are returning to “Smallville” this year as General Sam Lane – Lois Lane’s Dad – and Lucy Lane – Lois’s little sister. Many of you may have read this news story and not thought much of it – historically minor characters are returning to a show on which they appeared six seasons ago and, in Lucy Lane’s case, only once. Except the decision to bring back the General and Lucy proves that “Smallville” is serious about opening the door for just about anyone to return this year.

So how about Dr. Virgil Swann? Whether in a flashback or a clone, why not bring back the Christopher Reeve-played character, except played in Season 10 by (wait for it) Brandon Routh (“Superman Returns”). We already know Routh can play Reeve playing in the Superman universe. Routh was recently quoted as saying perhaps he played in the universe too recently for it to not be confusing for him to appear on “Smallville”. Except, if done right, this could be a lovely homage to the man who created the film role that made Routh’s first film role possible. What do you think? Tribute or tacky?
August 13, 2030: Superman Exhibit Leaves Port Townsend in Washington State

The Peninsula Daily News, a Washington State news source, reports on your last chance to check out a Superman exhibit before a Smithsonian exhibit moves in.

From the site:

PORT TOWNSEND -- Kryptonite couldn't kill him, but the Smithsonian will, said Jefferson County Historical Society director Bill Tennent as he announced that Superman will leave the museum this month to make way for a Smithsonian traveling exhibit.

The last day to see Superman and the History of American Comic Books -- comics from Tennent's private collection -- at the Jefferson County Historical Museum at 540 Water St., Port Townsend, will be next Sunday, Aug. 22.

The exhibit features many rare Superman comics from the 1940s through the 1990s including Superman's 1988 visit to Port Townsend depicted in the comic Animal Man.
For the entire story, check out the Peninsula Daily News site.

August 12, 2010: From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast

Welcome to the 62nd episode of From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast! This podcast has a simple premise; examine just about every Superman comic published between Man of Steel #1 in 1986 to Adventures of Superman #649 in 2006 in an informative and hopefully entertaining format.

Part index. Part commentary. Part history lesson. All podcast.

Due to technical difficulties the episode you should be listening to went bye-bye. So no WORLD’S FINEST this week. Instead Mike and Jeff roll out another edition of the From Crisis to Crisis Mailbag where the boys read YOUR e-mails. Highlights include how Mike and Jeff organize their comics, thoughts on the fate of Amanda McCoy, Mike’s limited knowledge of THE TWILIGHT ZONE, why you sometimes can’t go home again, a discussion on what state Metropolis is in, what one of the show’s younger listeners thinks of “recent” events in the Superman books, why Bibbo is awesome, what words Mike can’t pronounce and much more!

Quick note; Mike mentions a listener’s podcast called Being Carter Hall. One problem; it’s not a podcast. It is a blog. Check it out either way.

Next Week: Batman and Superman team up in the WORLD’S FINEST mini-series. For reals this time.

You can subscribe to the show in two ways. First there is the RSS Feed and there is also the iTunes link. You can also download the episode directly.

If you want to comment on the show or contact the hosts you can always private message Mike and Jeff, leave comments here or email them at fromcrisistocrisis@gmail.com.
August 12, 2010: Detroit Free Press Covers Superman's Walk to Motor City

Part two of the Superman storyline “Grounded” hit the stands yesterday and Superman continues his walk across America. Issue 702 brings the Man of Steel to Detroit, Michigan and the Detroit Free Press has an article touting Supey’s visit to the Motor City:

The Detroit-themed issue gives Superman a chance to meet some local residents and see how the economic downturn has affected the area.

"One of the story lines actually takes him to a recently closed auto plant in the city," says Dan DiDio, copublisher of DC Comics.

Superman also plays basketball with some teens and faces a mysterious otherworldly threat.

DiDio says he hopes that when people read it, "they actually will feel that this story is taking place in Detroit and could only be told in that city."

Future stops on Superman’s walking tour will include cities in Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, California, Oregon, and Washington. In the DC Universe, Detroit’s big claim to superhero fame is having played host to a prior incarnation of the Justice League which at that time included Aquaman, Martian Manhunter, Gypsy, Vibe, Steel, and Vixen.
August 12, 2010: Interview with Dan Jurgens
One of Superman’s main writers and artists from the John Byrne era and a prominent member of the team that killed and resurrected the Man of Steel, Dan Jurgens sat down with Comics Nexus and spoke in part about his past work on the Metropolis Marvel:

I think we made the Superman franchise remarkably credible — not that it wasn’t when we got there.

When I first started and it was just two or three books, we began to build the formula for what would become a weekly comic book and worked very, very well. Long before “The Death…” we did a number good, quality stories.

“The Death…” still stands as a landmark in comics publishing that will always be part of Superman lore. In addition, to create a couple of villains like Doomsday and Cyborg Superman, who both have great resonance years later, is a real accomplishment.

Among those “good, quality stories” to which Jurgens refers are several which Jurgens further speaks about in this brief but nostalgic interview including “Krisis of the Krimson Kryptonite”, “Time and Time Again”, and “Dark Knight Over Metropolis”. Read the entire interview here.
August 12, 2010: Late Superman Fan Honored in Metropolis
The Kenosha News has an article about late Superman fan William Andersen who died at the age of 20 a year ago and the boy's special relationship with the City of Metropolis, Illinois:

Mark Andersen, William’s father, said the family had moved into the Kenosha area from Georgia about 12 years ago. The trips from Kenosha to Georgia and back often landed the family in Metropolis, Ill., the small city in southern Illinois that has been designated “Hometown of Superman” and hosts the Superman Celebration. It was a trip that always delighted William.

“We have pictures from when he was two years old in his Superman pajamas,” Mark Andersen said. “Superman was his number one.”

William died last June at the age of 20. This year the Superman Celebration was held from June 10-14, just about a year since William’s death. Mark said there was never any doubt that the family, from Kenosha and Georgia, would still be making the trip to Metropolis. But they also made sure William would be the focal point of their trip.

“We had to do that,” Mark said. “It was in his memory and we knew quite a bit of people come there.”

William’s family bought a brick in his memory that sits in front of the base of a Lois Lane statue that was unveiled at this year’s Superman Celebration.

They also brought a picture that William had drawn of the cast of “Smallville,” the television show about the younger years of Superman/Clark Kent. The Andersen family had contacted the Superman museum in Metropolis and asked if they could donate William’s drawing. The picture was on display at the city’s Chamber of Commerce during this year’s Superman Celebration.
