February 9, 2010: "Superman/Batman - Journey to the Dark Side"?
There's speculation going around that Warner Bros. will be releasing a sequel to the top-selling "Superman/Batman: Public Enemies" animated movie later this year. The following information was posted to the MillarWorld boards...

Since we all know the hot-selling Superman/Batman: Public Enemies was a hit on sales. It seems DC will make sequels out of that series instead of the other line of stories they could have used.

So the German site for WB products shows that September would be releasing Superman/Batman - Journey to the Dark Side.

Now there is no storyline like that in the comics, but will they take inspiration from the Loeb stories like they did in the first movie? Is the second one going to be the Michael Turner penciled "The Supergirl From Krypton" with some of the most iconic villains out there? From Darkseid to Female Furies!

Or will they make their own story or adapt plenty of stories from Superman/Batman book?

I can't verify whether the above information is indeed correct, as the German site doesn't currently have that information on their site. However I am awaiting word from my sources within Warner Bros. to find out one way or the other.

Thanks to Eli Gutierrez for the lead on this info.

Sharp-eyed viewers would have spotted an interesting symbol during Friday night's "Absolute Justice" tele-movie "Smallville" event.

In the scene where Clark, Courtney, and Carter are talking about teams, Courtney asks Clark "So what do you call your team, anyway?" and Clark smiles saying, "A work in progress." The scene cuts to the Watchtower, directly above of what looks like a touch screen table where you can see a logo of some sort in all blue.

Superman Homepage member Terry McGinnis noticed that if you rotate the image you see a few letters that look very much like a stylized JLA (Justice League of America) logo.
This is part 1 of our 4-part series examining the "Super Friends" comic book.

By Adam Dechanel.

So with everything going on in comics the last few years, you'll perhaps have noticed that comics aren't as safe and wholesome as they used to be... sex crimes, dismemberment, manslaughter, murder... it's all there and there isn't one mainstream DCU book that hasn't featured things perhaps you would want to see. Then amongst the more adult world came a book that decided it wanted to entertain children, specifically there were a few that launched at the end of the DCUA (DC Universe Animation) demise. Billy Batson, Supergirl Cosmic Adventures, Tiny Titans and for our focus: DC Super Friends.

Many moons ago there was a cartoon show of the same name that is fondly remembered by its now adult viewers... Mattel & DC had decided to resurrect that idealism with this new version. I know, I know - its based on a toy line... that would have many a parent's alarm bells ringing and I'm no different. To begin with I hated this book, one because it heralded the end of the much adored DCUA and two because it was, as He-Man and many other were in years past, perceived as a commercial to sell toys.

Month after month I reviewed the books, ranting and raving at the preaching and adverts and the super deformed Super Friends. Somewhere along the line though my viewpoint changed... was it when Wonder Woman assassinated a man? When Superboy-Prime ripped Risk's arms off? When Supergirl almost murdered Batgirl? When Batman ripped out a villain's intestines? When Flash was beaten to death? When Superman decided to abandon us? Perhaps it was when zombies laid waste to the DCU... No, it was none of them.

A little girl asked me why I liked comics so much and what was going on in them... I explained - obviously editing out some of the above, and she looked a little disgusted... I was saddened - how can a child despise the very heroes many of us grew up with? So I fished out the latest issue of Super Friends and well... she loved it! We did the activities, we read the comics and we played with the Super Friends code.

I was more than a little disappointing in myself for my judgment of the book, but in a bizarre twist of fate, the series' artists, J. Bone & Stewart McKenny contacted me and through their insight I began to realize what a gem this book really is...

And so this 'behind the scenes' was born... Click "Read More" below to view "Part one: Stewart McKenny".

Speaking with the LA Times, Brandon Routh talks about moving on after playing Superman...

Asked whether he would be making another "Superman" movie, Routh says, "You know as much as I know. I don't know anything. I went through some anticipation for a while but it has been four years now so I have moved on to other things."

Joining "Chuck" meant Routh had to blend into a cast that already had a smooth chemistry.

"You learn when to speak up and when not," Routh says. "I think I have found my place now."

The role proves the Superman curse doesn't hit every actor. George Reeves, who played the Man of Steel in the '50s TV series, and Christopher Reeve, Superman in the '70s and '80s movies, both complained that playing the part limited the roles they were offered.

"Playing Superman hasn't haunted me by any means," Routh says. "The challenge with that is a lot of people in the industry just stereotyped 'Superman Returns' as a silly kind of movie. I have done quite a lot of roles since then, but not a lot has gotten out."
February 5, 2010: History of DC Comics Documentary
Collider.com has posted an interview with director Jeffrey Blitz and producer Sean Welch about their up-coming documentary on the history of DC Comics, created with the blessing of the comic book publisher.

While millions of kids around the world know the origin of Superman and Batman, I'd wager most of them don't know they were originally created by DC comics a long time ago. But if director Jeffrey Blitz (Spellbound, Rocket Science, Lucky) and producer Sean Welch (he produced all three of Blitz's movies) have their way, at this summer's Comic-Con, a lot more people are going to know the history of DC comics.

The reason is at last week's Sundance Film Festival, the two filmmakers told me they've just started work on a documentary about the history of DC Comics! While they just started rolling cameras last week, they said the plan is to premiere the movie at this summer's Comic-Con.
Here's a good news story from MSNBC.com about a real-life Superman...

Man's Feat of Strength Saves Girl

'I don't know how I did it,' says 'Superman'

It was lucky for a 6-year-old girl that Nick Harris didn't know his own strength.

And now Harris is being called Superman after managing to lift a car off the girl, according to Kansas City, Kansas, television station KCTV.

Harris was dropping off his daughter at Eugene Field Elementary in Ottawa, Kansas, when he saw a car back out of a driveway and pin the girl under a tire. That girl turned out to be his daughter's best friend.

"I just ran over there, I looked, I seen the tire on her, and I lifted the car up to get her out from underneath the car," Harris told KCTV, adding that it was sheer instinct that led him to save the girl. "I don't know how I did it. I've tried (to lift a car) three or four times since then."

Read the complete story at the MSNBC website.

Thanks to Joe Valentin, MacGyver, Juan Ricardo Lopez, and Butch Moore, who all emailed in letting me know about this story.
By Barry Freiman

Whatever happened to Chloe Sullivan's super power? Ever since she had a 31st Century style exorcism of Brainiac, it appears her power to give life has disappeared. Or is it laying dormant for some greater purpose? What if Jor-El has somehow dampened her ability to use her power to serve as the ultimate escape hatch for his son?

Brainiac once tried to steal information from Chloe's mind and somehow her ability overpowered him, with Brainiac cowering "What the hell are you?" What if she's powerful enough to return life to a lifeless Man of Steel? Perhaps she is fated to do just that in the series finale. If she did her thing in the Fortress of Solitude, and Jor-El used the Kryptonian technology therein to boost her, perhaps she'd give all her energy resuscitating Superman. That would explain why the Legion had never heard of her.

But, Chloe fans - myself included - might cry, what about those of us who want to see the show end with Chloe's character intact if for no other reason than to ensure the character's relevance to Superman's perpetuity? Try this on for size. What if Jor-El contains Chloe's consciousness before it dissipates using the Fortress tech? Chloe could live on in the Fortress walls so to speak.

Then, when Clark is ready to take the keys to the Fortress from his Dad's spirit, he should put his own touch on it. Superman is the best of Earth combined with the best of Krypton. His Fortress haven should be his personal space, not his Dad's, and therefore should reflect who Superman is and not what Krypton was. What better way to represent that than by substituting a virtual Chloe for the virtual Jor-El as the Fortress master of ceremonies? Chloe gets to go on without treading on legacies otherwise filled by Lois and Lana. She'd then get to have a lasting original role in Superman continuity and one that could easily be written retroactively into the comics as a 'previously unknown chapter in Clark's past'. I like it but I wrote it - what do you all think?

Friday at 8 PM on "Smallville", the new episodes continue. TVGuide.com spoke with Erica Durance and asked her about her role as Lois Lane on "Smallville". Here's a portion of the interview...

TVGuide.com: Is it weird now having to do these steamy scenes with Tom?

Durance: Nope! No, it's not weird. It's just like any other scene that you're doing. Our focus isn't whether the scene is steamy. It's always tricky when you've had two characters that have been not together, but wanting to be together and then figuring out how to actually bring them together and honor that iconic relationship, that's been trickier than our steamy scenes.

TVGuide.com: Annette O'Toole is returning to the show. Will Martha Kent approve of their relationship?
Durance: The one thing that Lois found is that Martha was the first person that was very accepting of Lois and could see through all of the awkward things that she would do and her defense mechanisms. So I believe that she would actually be fine with it.

Ausiello: I hope you survive long enough to catch the Valentine's Day-themed episode on Feb. 19, because it features two things no Smallville fan should miss: Lois dancing in a wedding dress and a catfight between Chloe and Tess!
February 4, 2010: Levitz Talks "Adventure Comics" and "Superman/Batman"
Paul Levitz spoke with ComicBookResources.com about taking on the Legion of Super-Heroes, "Adventure Comics", and writing a story for the "Superman/Batman" title. Here's an excerpt from the interview...

I wanted to ask a bit about your "Superman/Batman" story. While a lot of people have looked at this idea of you playing with "Batman Beyond" elements in your work, I've heard that your doing a lot with the title characters in taking Superman to space and having him viewed as a god. Did you want to make this story have an old school "anything can happen in a Superman comic" feel more akin to what was done in the '50s and '60s?

I think the genesis of that story line was playing around with the idea of a story that would have long term ramifications. At one point in its construction, I was trying to do it as a "same time next year" story where it would take place over a four or five year period with each issue taking place in a different year. As the story evolved, that structure didn't end up working out too well. But I hope it's not an old time story in that it will feel like what was done in the '50s and '60s...I wasn't even writing comics in either of those decades. I was even too young to be reading them in the '50s. But the part of what you said that I did try to do was to do a story that would not have naturally been in either of their books and to take advantage of that. I look at the conjunction of where the characters lives were and not be locked into the continuity of four other titles for each of them going on at the same moment. This could be just a story of this particular moment in their lives. And then you try to do an interesting character resonance off that.

You can read the complete interview at the CBR website.
Time Warner held their Fourth Quarter and full year 2009 earnings conference call earlier today, where they announced a big profit for the quarter. Additionally, the call was opened to questions, and the following information was revealed by TW Chairman & CEO Jeff Bewkes in regards to the future of DC Comics movies...

If you go to your question on DC, we are going to have a fairly interesting set of announcements and presentations pretty soon like in a matter of weeks I think. About our plans for DC and basically if you look across the title of the whole band of hits whether its Batman, The Dark Knight, Green Lantern coming up, Superman, there have been a huge number of franchised films that have been part of the Warner [tent pole] strategy that's been the reason for Warner's unparallel high and consistent earnings advantage over the other studios and DC has already been a part of that and we are now going to outline an even more expansive plan for that in the coming months.
