With Thanksgiving being celebrated in the USA today, here’s a look back at Superman’s history with Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
A Superman balloon first featured in the parade in 1939. The balloon was so large it needed to be handled by 50 people.
The second Superman balloon first appeared in 1966 and, like its predecessor, featured an upright design.
The third Superman balloon first featured in the 1982 Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade and was created to place Superman in a horizontal flying pose.
The video clip below shows the same Superman balloon two years later in 1984.
However the same Superman balloon didn’t fair too well a year later in 1985.
While Superman hasn’t appeared in the parade for quite a few years, and isn’t in this year’s parade, it should be noted that the 1980’s Superman balloon is the largest Thanksgiving Day Parade balloon ever, measuring 104 feet in length!
i enjoy this article every thanksgiving, and i wish superman would make a grand reappearance again and fire up some tradition back in the parades soon
