June 12, 2009: Gail Simone Interview from Superman Celebration

The Southern Illinoisan conducted an interview for their Flipside feature with writer Gail Simone, who is a special guest at the 2009 Superman Celebration taking place as you read this. Here's a portion of that interview...

Was it more daunting for you to write Superman or Wonder Woman?

Probably Wonder Woman. With Superman, there's a greater pre-existing awareness of his story, his powers and his friends. Everyone knows Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen. In fact, each of them had long-running comics of their own a few decades back. With Wonder Woman, I have to be a bit more aware that every issue is someone's introduction to her story and cast. But I love them both, and writing Wonder Woman is just a ridiculously joyful experience. She means a lot to a world of people, not just comic fans.

It's been said that the differences between Batman and Superman is that Superman is Clark Kent's secret identity, but Bruce Wayne is Batman's. Does that speak to the core of the type of character Superman is?

They both are products of their childhood. Bruce is Batman first because his parents were killed, but Clark is Clark first because his parents lived. If Superman weren't a Kansas farmboy at heart, he really would be insufferable. He's so powerful. But he was taught humility and compassion by his adopted parents, which is one thing the Smallville television show really got right early on.
