January 20, 2009: Kurt Busiek Talks "Trinity"

WizardUniverse.com spoke with writer Kurt Busiek about the on-going 52-issue weekly "Trinity" comic book series. Here's a portion of the interview...

In a recent issue, one of the main protagonists of "Camelot Falls" made an appearance in Lord Khyber. Considering his role in the end of mankind in the Superman story, what sort of ramifications could his involvement mean in the story?

BUSIEK: Well, Khyber wasn't out to end humanity in "Camelot Falls" - things just worked out that way. He'd much rather have ruled the world. But with him out there in the shadows, he seemed like a good choice for one of the more regal Arcana roles - the Hierophant or the Emperor - so I didn't want to leave him out just because I made him up. Carlos did a great job designing him, it'd be a waste to just leave him in Limbo.

But he also filled a role we needed - a lot of the Dark Arcana could be brought on stage pretty easily, either sprung from jail, or else we know enough about them to know they'd be up for this kind of power-grab. But some of them aren't so obvious. So it'd be nice to see a few of the Dark Arcana get recruited, or give reasons for why they joined in. So Khyber - due to his secretive, shadowy nature - was a good character to show being recruited, and we gave Brainiac a chance to explain his interest in all this, and those bits by themselves suggest that others we see in the group have their own reasons or were similarly recruited. We can't show 22 recruitments, but we can imply that it was a more involved process that just inviting them over for pizza.

There's one other Dark Arcana member we'll see getting recruited, and that should be fun, too.

As for what Khyber may do in upcoming issues, well he's certainly capable of a lot, from taking out Superman to stabbing Morgaine in the back. You never know with him. It depends on where he sees the most advantage...
