Superman Returns

July 11, 2007: Superman Sequel Pitch, Screenplay Coming, Kevin Spacey Returns

Variety reports that Kevin Spacey will indeed return in the role of Lex Luthor for the next Superman movie, which Bryan Singer is about to pitch to Warner Bros., with Michael Dougherty (and presumably Dan Harris) currently sitting down to write the screenplay...

"Superman" director Bryan Singer met with Spacey in New York while the latter was appearing on Broadway in Eugene O'Neill's recently wrapped "Moon for the Misbegotten." Singer was about to pitch his "Man of Steel" sequel to Warner Bros.; "Superman Returns" scripter Michael Dougherty is now writing the screenplay.

Spacey hopes to shoot his Luthor role in a six-week block, as he did on "Superman Returns," after he completes his run in David Mamet's "Speed the Plow" in April.

Spacey, who has eight years remaining on his 10-year contract as artistic director of London's Old Vic Theater, corrected recent Internet stories announcing his retirement from film acting in favor of the stage.

"My priorities have changed," he admitted on the phone from London. "Theater is the No. 1 thing in my life. But I love movies and will continue to make movies when I can."

On Tuesday, Spacey told Daily Variety, "In no way did I use the word retirement. Someone else pulled that out of thin air. It's false, there's not a lick of truth to it."

Meanwhile, ContactMusic.com reports that Brandon Routh's engagement ring is crafted from a blue stone he picked up at English historical landmark Stonehenge. Brandon found the ideal rock for his engagement band during a tourist visit to the U.K.

He says, "The blue stone is part of what some of the stones at Stonehenge are made of. So the ring is from there but I got it encased in silver to strengthen it and it looks cool." But despite his love for all things English, Routh insists he and Ford have no plans to wed overseas. Routh adds, "We're getting married in the States. We're not going to make anybody travel too far."

Colin Shearing from Preseli Bluestone Ltd contacted the Superman Homepage to give further details on the stone Brandon chose for his ring.

"The stone that Superman actor Brandon Routh chose for his engagement ring is Preseli Bluestone, not just any old 'blue stone'", says Mr Shearing. "My lapidary company has the last of the Preseli Bluestones and we polish them and turn them into beautiful jewellery and artefacts. These are the stones that were used in the earliest build phase of Stonehenge, thousands of years ago and there is a great deal of mystery about them - he and his fiancee chose a very special stone indeed."
