August 3, 2007: San Diego 2007: Countdown to Salvation Tangent Run to the Finals!

(A Piece of Somewhat Late Investigative Journalism)

By Neal Bailey

You folks might have to bear with me, I'm sicker than that kid I passed the other day in the giant Yu-Gi-Oh outfit. But regardless, here I sit, four days after the con has ended, and we must have a suite!

I'm going to basically report on what I found as a journalist at the San Diego Comic-Con. You may have read it on CBR, Newsarama, heck, anywhere first. I have not.

My friend Greg, who accompanied me after the show, put it to me this way: "Neal, aren't you supposed to have written the article about the show as it went on?"

I solemnly nodded, thinking about how, since Greg and Stephen both have a British accent, I could probably fake one and pass, in America. That might score chicks. But back to the task at hand, I shook my head, turning back to my new friend, and said something akin to the following:

"Yes and no. See, it's like this. I'm not exactly a journalist. I'm a writer. A journalist's job is to report the facts, and there's no way, particularly with the tech I have, to report faster than the competitors. Not in the internet age. The reason I'm here, and the reason that people read what I do, at least I hope, is the perspective. If not, I'd probably have been booted off the Homepage long ago. The site has a lot of exclusive information, but I don't get many real scoops. Beside that, I figure folks will read the article if only to see the Superman-focal and/or relevant information."

And then we watched The Simpsons. Which rocked.

That night I got back the internets, produced a few of the regular reviews, and then drove for two straight days to get to this point. Those tales, more personal than journalistic, will be detailed in my (NSFW) livejournal, feel free to read up. I know I usually do a Gonzo article, but this time there's just too much info on both sides for the personal and the information not to be their own articles.

Here's the pertinent information from the con:

DC COUNTDOWN...TO THE END? (THURSDAY)

  • There will be a REASON for Jimmy knowing the Jason Todd identity. (This before it came out this week in the comics. Looks like Meta-gaming to me.)

  • The Legion, and its Multiverse matters, will be resolved within one year, and there are currently three Legions in existence.

  • Supergirl #21 and #22 will deal with these resolutions with the Legion.

  • Careful note was made that the Legion's 50 year anniversary is forthcoming.

  • In a question about the biggest editorial failure put to the entire panel, Mike Carlin indicated that he believed the restart after the Crisis could have been done better, leading into my current theory that the Final Crisis will end the DCU as it stands and begin with new origins for all characters, featuring Morrison's previous idea for the future heroes and involving Kingdom Come.

  • A question was asked: "How close will the Kingdom Come Universe come to Countdown." This was met with a prolonged, indicative silence.

  • There is an All-Star Squadron project in the works.

  • We were expressly told that the Superman origin will be cleared up, and that there is a plan. No elaboration on what this could be was given.

  • The New Gods were (no news here) reportedly screwed.

  • DiDio informed us that, as of issue 26, Countdown would officially change its title to "Countdown to Final Crisis."

DC's "Crossing Over" panel offered nothing substantial that I could discern about Superman, though it was an interesting, well done panel.

    DC NATION PANEL (FRIDAY)

  • In what appears to be DC's answer to Planet Hulk, Bill Willingham will be writing a story called "Salvation Run," which will involve villains being exiled onto other worlds by a sinister force in the background of the DCU. (You can deride me for the commentary here, but it was also offered in questions and, spontaneously, without my prompting, by the people to my left and right at two separate panels).

  • Final Crisis will be written by Grant Morrison, and will be seven issues in length.

  • JG Jones, the cover artist for the 52 comic, will be the illustrator.

  • All-Star Batgirl is currently on indefinite hold.

  • The Tangent Universe will re-emerge as a result of the events of Final Crisis.

    DC NEW WORLDS ORDER (SATURDAY)

  • The Sinestro Corps will NOT impact the Final Crisis, and the issues with the Anti-Monitor being in that series will be resolved. (Relevant for Superboy Prime)

  • There will be a new Crime Bible series written by Greg Rucka and featuring the Renee Montoya Question (Relevant as Superman's Intergang will be involved).

  • Some guy has shirts that read "Dan DiDio Must Die." That alone is worth a headline.

  • There will be new work with the Injustice League in the McDuffie JLA run, which will shortly commence.

    SMALLVILLE

  • A teaser video showed Supergirl in action, along with Chloe in a sheet and emerging from a morgue drawer, a fight between Clark and Bizarro, a burning man with a kryptonian symbol burned into his corpse, a spaceship, mention of Zor-El and Jor-El. The impression I got from Laura's work is slightly wooden acting, but great visuals. But then, I've only seen about thirty seconds.

  • In a large reel featuring past clips from the show, Lana's death in episode 100 was met with applause.

  • Dean Cain will be appearing in the fourth episode as a Vandal Savage style baddie.

  • Lana will survive, or at very least, Laura, the new Supergirl, will meet Kristen. In what appeared to be a flub, Laura indicated she was going to meet and work with Kristin, which strongly suggests that Lana will survive. Which is obvious, but now we know.

  • Supergirl is released through the dam hitting her ship, where she's in suspended animation, according to Gough.

  • Olliver Queen will appear midseason, along with old and new JLA characters.

  • Manhunter will appear in the show.

  • There will be a new editor, and he will be romantically interested in Lois.

  • Lois will join the staff at the Daily Planet.

  • Rosenbaum would have attended the panel, but he was having back surgery. Welling would have attended, but he was filming dual Bizarro scenes. No mention was made of why Kreuk and Mack were not present.

  • There will, definitively, never be a Bruce Wayne appearance on Smallville.

  • A fan asked about timeline and mythology issues, to which Gough and Millar replied that Smallville was its own continuity. The mythology was skirted.

  • As reported on this site, the creators mentioned that the glasses issue wasn't their problem, so they wouldn't address it.

  • We will see Clark attempt to fly, with Kara giving him lessons.

  • New figures based on the JL were unveiled, with Arthur, Cyborg, Flash, Clark, and Martian Manhunter.

All in all, that's a lot of information to digest, so I'll leave you to it. All the best!

    Neal
