June 2, 2007: Dan Jurgens Talks “History of the Multiverse”

The Pulse has conducted an interview with writer/artist Dan Jurgens to ask him a few questions regarding the "History of the Multiverse" back-up stories which he's writing and illustrating for the "Countdown" weekly comic book series. Here's an excerpt from the interview...

Q: Why do you think the Multiverse is coming back now?

JURGENS: I think everyone appreciates the expansive story ideas the Multiverse offers. It allows for character explorations, twists and possibilities that are much harder to pull off in a single universe. In other words, if there are four planets, each with a Batman, one of them might have a level of latitude built in that the others don't.

Q: What did you think of the original Crisis on Infinite Earths that eliminated all of those multiverses and made it one compact universe?

JURGENS: At the time, it was an effective tool for streamlining a universe that some saw as unwieldy and confusing. It also brought some Marvel readers over to DC to see what the excitement was all about.

Q: How do you approach something so expansive as a History of the Multiverse? How do you research something like this?

JURGENS: It's researched via my own memory and a massive stack of comics that are sitting here. Again, we're hitting the high points here, in so far as the other universes go.

Q: What will each part of this be exploring?

JURGENS: I think the best way to approach this is with some sense of chronological order, starting with the first time two universes interacted. This happened, of course, when Earth-1's Flash inadvertently traveled to Earth-2.
