Action Comics #850

March 19, 2007: Fabian Nicieza on Writing “Action Comics”

The Pulse caught up with writer Fabian Nicieza to talk to him about writing a 2-part story in "Action Comics" coming out in April and May. Here's part of what he had to say...

Q: I think Superman would be kind of an intimidating character to write, because he seems to be able to do just about anything .... What are some of the challenges of coming up with a situation that he can't just solve by flicking his pinky finger out or super sneezing or something? How tough is it for you to write the Man of Steel?

FABIAN NICIEZA: I think the strength of the best Superman stories lies in the complexity of the conflict you give the character -- and by that, I don't mean the physical conflict. Since Superman can do so much, I think it's more important to focus on WHY he does it or HOW he has to do it in order to really dig into the character.

The harder you make the choices Superman has to make in a story, the more interesting those decisions and their consequences become.

Q: What do you think is one area or element surrounding the Superman mythos that hasn't been explored enough? Are you touching upon that in your two-parter?

NICIEZA: I think there is still a tremendous amount of exploration to be done on the mythos as a whole, especially now as the "post-Crisis" world is being redefined and clarified. When I was asked to help out with the schedule and pitch some two-part stories, I offered Matt and Nachie several different ideas. They happened to pick the one I most wanted to do and would walk that fine line of exploring "new ground" for the character.

The two-parter in ACTION #848 and #849 is called "Redemption," and it introduces a new antagonist -- not villain -- whose motivations and powers are faith-based.
