November 17, 2005: Details of “Superman Returns” Filming in Newcastle

The Daily Telegraph newspaper has posted a report on where and when filming for "Superman Returns" will hit Newcastle (a city 2 hours drive north of Sydney) in Australia...

Instead, three local actors will steal the limelight during the two days of filming, with Film Hunter manager Christine Armstrong confirming yesterday that none of the major actors would be among the 150 cast and crew expected to converge on the city.

She said their roles for the scene had already been completed in Sydney, and there would only be minor roles filmed in Newcastle.

Crew will start arriving on Tuesday, with filming set for Wednesday and Thursday before a return to Sydney on Friday. King St, between Auckland and Darby streets, has been scheduled to close for five days from noon on November 21. Between 6pm and 6am on three of those days, the King St closure will be extended to Union St, and Auckland St will be closed between Hunter and Laman streets.

All filming will take place within these areas, with most of it to be shot in University House.

City Hall and Civic Park, however, will also feature as part of the background.

It took six visits to Newcastle from set directors, location managers and senior Warner Bros executives before they decided to shoot in the city.
