April 17, 2005: Super Day for Sydney

Robbie Collin of the Sunday Telegraph wrote the follow two reports...

ACTOR Brandon Routh, who plays the Man of Steel in the new Superman Returns movie, shot his only outdoor scene in Sydney's CBD yesterday.

York and Barrack streets were transformed into Metropolis, the fictional US city where the movie takes place.

The set was surrounded by a ring of about 80 security guards, charged with preventing any script leaks.

Yellow Cabs and Daily Planet delivery vans rumbled along as a key scene was filmed. It involved Superman's alter ego, Clark Kent, tearing off his clothes to reveal the superhero costume.

A smartly dressed Routh ran past a Metropolis phone box and then dived into York Lane, where he changed his clothes and flew off to save the day.

Ricardo Skaff, 19, made the four-hour drive from Canberra to try to catch a glimpse of the action.

"I have been following Superman since I saw the original movie with Christopher Reeve," the university student said.

And this one, similar but longer...

THE Man of Steel hit the streets of Sydney yesterday as rising star Brandon Routh leapt into action for the new Superman movie being shot in the city.

Sydney's CBD was transformed into bustling Metropolis, the fictional city in which Superman Returns takes place.

The set was surrounded by security guards to prevent script leaks.

Yellow Cabs and Daily Planet delivery vans rumbled along as a key scene was filmed.

It involved Superman's alter ego, mild-mannered reporter Clark Kent, tearing off his work clothes to reveal the superhero costume.

Routh looked smart in a tan waistcoat, striped shirt, slacks and sensible shoes.

A crowd of extras watched an emergency newsflash on TV screens in the window of a department store.

Routh, 25, ran past a Metropolis phone box and dived into York Lane, where he changed outfits and flew off to save the day.

Routh, an American soap actor, is one of the lesser-known members of the cast that includes Kate Bosworth (Lois Lane), Kevin Spacey (Lex Luthor), Hugh Laurie (Perry White) and Eva Marie Saint (Martha Kent).

Archival footage will be used for an appearance by screen legend Marlon Brando (Jor-El), who died last year.

Superman superfan Ricardo Skaff, 19, made the four-hour drive from Canberra to catch a glimpse of the action.

"I've been following Superman since I saw the original movie starring Christopher Reeve, so there is a lot riding on this for me," the university student said.

"I arrived at 4am, and I managed to get up close to the set before they put the cameras up.

"Seeing the filming is an absolute dream come true - if I get a look at the costume I'll be driving home happy."

A scene from the finale had the crowd at the store windows cheering a TV news broadcast of Superman defeating arch-enemy Lex Luthor's evil plot.

The movie is scheduled to be released next year.
