April 9, 2005: Exclusive Report - Filming on “Superman Returns”

SPOILER WARNING: Be warned the following report reveals some key plot points for "Superman Returns".

York Street, Sydney was the place to be today if you were looking for Bryan Singer and the cast and crew of "Superman Returns".

I (Steve Younis) took a trip down to the city by train, coming out at Wynyard Station where I had been told they'd be filming of outdoor scenes for "Superman Returns".

The whole of Wynyard Park had been blocked off to public access, with security and police at every vantage point. Wearing my Superman T-shirt, I was quickly indentified as someone they needed to watch out for, but it was also a blessing, as the local media (TV and newspaper, who were also blocked out) quickly latched onto me for interviews and information.

Here's what I did see: They were filming a scene outside a building which they converted into Metropolis General Hospital. This was reportedly the largest scene they'd be shooting for the movie, with around 1,300 extras being employed for the scene. The extras were used as crowd, standing around outside the Hospital, holding banners and waving flags. The banners read, "Save Our Superman", "I love Superman", "Superman Don't Die!", "God Speed Superman". There were also dozens and dozens of flower arrangements lying in the park (as if in tribute for someone who was sick or dying).

I'm assuming this means Superman gets very badly injured (or possibly killed) during the movie, making it necessary for him to be taken to hospital.

Bryan Singer arrived on-set, I snapped a quick photo, had a quick word with him, shook hands, and he was off to work.

Having heard mention of Kate's arrival to the set on a nearby security guard's 2-way radio, I quickly made my way down to the hotel where the make-up department had been established, and sure enough, within minutes, out walked Kate Bosworth. She looked resplendant in her Lois Lane portrayal. Unfortunately they would not allow me to take a photo of her in costume, but I can tell you that she was wearing an earthy tan/brown business suit, with her hair a dark brown, wavy, shoulder-length. She looked the part... Lois Lane to perfection!

Some of the photos show you how they transformed Sydney into Metropolis. There were buses and taxis with Metropolis signage, the street signs were changed to be Metropolis street signs (with Daily Planet images), the posters on the bus shelters had Metropolis Museum and Daily Planet posters displayed in them. Wynyard Station had been renamed Shuster Square.

I met a great bunch of fellow Superman fans down there, and together we managed to grab some great photos. The ones displayed here today are the ones I managed to take, but I can tell you that some of the others guys managed to get some even better photos which I will place online over the next few days.

Australian fans should tune in to Channel 10 News (from 5pm) and then Channel 7 News (from 6pm) as both had reporters and camera-crew there, and both interviewed me about the movie. The Daily Telegraph also had a reporter down there, and he also interviewed me, so there may be something in the April 10th or 11th edition of the Daily Telegraph or Sunday Telegraph newspapers.

I've just returned back home to place this report online, and plan to expand on this with more photos in the coming days.
