Superman: The Movie

March 22, 2005: Director Guillermo Del Toro's Planet Revolves Around Superman

The April 2005 issue of Premiere magazine has the following excerpt from a piece titled "What Is the Perfect Comic-Book Movie?" (page 20)...

"Whether it's a Charles Dickens novel or a Shakespearean piece, or an opera libretto that you're adapting, you have to have an affinity for it," says Guillermo Del Toro, who turned down Blade: Trinity, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and Fantastic Four to direct his pet projects Hellboy and Hellboy 2 (slated for a 2006 release). "That is key in a comic-book movie: that the people executing it are doing it out of passion."

According to del Toro, Superman: The Movie (1978) and Superman II (1980) "embodied an America that was so mythical and so pure and so attuned with the spirit of the original comic book. It's like a Saturday Evening Post cover." For inspiration, del Toro brought the first two installments of the Superman franchise to Spain, where he is writing the script for Hellboy 2. He admires the films' sweet, almost silly, approach to the mythology of Superman.

"I love the scene where Superman takes Lois Lane on a date through the clouds," says del Toro, who stood in line for more than two hours to see Superman as a teenager in Mexico. "I know by today's standards, it's incredibly sappy, but back then it was just right. And one of the perfect things in that movie was Christopher Reeve. We came out of the theatre with a matinee idol for our generation."
