December 12, 2005: Superman and Songs Through Time

The New Jersey "Star Ledger" has published an article titled "It's a bird, it's a plane... it's Superman" in which they discuss the discovery of Christopher Reeve in the late 1970s, the trials and tribulations of George Reeves in the 1950s, all while making reference to songs that have the word "Superman" in their title. Here's an excerpt from the article...

"WE PUT A SEARCH OUT, and one day in New York, a skinny, kind of blondish/light brown-haired kid came in, who I just thought had something about him that stood out. ... I was totally intrigued with the fact that he could play Superman. ... I always say that he flew into my hotel room."

That's Richard Donner, director of 1978's "Superman," recalling his first meeting with the late Christopher Reeve, in a 2001 online interview with IGN FilmForce.

Just as Brandon Routh of next summer's "Superman" -- recently sneak-peeked before showings of "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" -- is a name only in his own household, so too, Reeve was little known in the late '70s.

Which suited Donner just fine. Though the producers of "Superman" pushed for a Redford or a Newman, Donner wanted a fresh face. After being screen-tested by Donner in London, Reeve got the role.

Now all he had to do was look the part. He bulked up on a regimen of pumping iron and protein, had his hair darkened and wore a spit-curl comma on his forehead. He modeled Clark Kent after Cary Grant in old screwball comedies.
