September 27, 2005: Superman Symphony Flying High

Samuel Black of the News Tribune has written a review of the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra's season debut, which had a huge Superman flavor to the event. Here's an excerpt from the review...

Sometimes playing "faster than a speeding bullet," the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra delivered a dazzling seasonal debut Saturday. The Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center Auditorium never ceased vibrating from the energized strains of Peter Tchaikovsky, Bela Bartok and Michael Daugherty.

Within five minutes, the pace of the evening was determined in Daugherty's 1993 "Metropolis Symphony." Based on memories of the Superman tales, its fourth movement is labeled "Oh Lois!" and has a tempo marked "faster than a speeding bullet" in the score. The placement of the timpanist and two percussionists at opposite sides of the stage helped create the swirling sound.

(Note: The Michael Daugherty mentioned here is not the same Michael Dougherty currently associated with "Superman Returns".)
