Bob Holiday as Superman

June 5, 2005: Superman Hits the Stage in Warsaw, Indiana

The South Bend Tribune is reporting that The Wagon Wheel Theater in Warsaw Indiana will be putting on a production of "It's a bird, It's a plane, It's Superman".

The Wagon Wheel in Warsaw has thrived in a small town for 50 years on the strength of the quality of entertainment it offers.

A theater-in-the-round, the Wagon Wheel presents logistical challenges some directors are reluctant to tackle, and the venue's success is a credit to the diligence of all those involved in the productions staged throughout the years.

Perhaps the greatest spectacle on this coming summer's docket is the Wagon Wheel's presentation of "It's a Bird ... It's a Plane ... It's Superman," which will feature the superhero actually flying during the performance. Because it's quite impossible to portray something like X-ray vision on the stage, flight became an obvious emphasis.

"We have hired a company to handle the flying mechanism for us and to do the rigging for it," says Bruce Shaffner, the Wagon Wheel's owner. "There are only about two companies in America who can do that, and we hired one of them. They'll come in and set it up and get it rigged for the flying of Superman."

The Flying Foys, who pioneered a revolutionary flying apparatus, will be launching the hero into the air during the show.

Shaffner is proud to be able to stage such a performance, noting that since Superman needs to fly in the play, most ensembles cannot consider taking on the task.

"It's a Bird ... It's a Plane ... It's Superman" will show from July 6-16t at the Ramada Wagon Wheel Playhouse, 2517 E. Center St., Warsaw. Call (574) 267-8041 or (866) 823-2618 or go to www.wagonwheeltheatre.com for more information.
