November 12, 2003: Kym Barrett Talks Superman Costume

Swedish newspaper Boras Tidning interviewed costume designer Kym Barrett ("The Matrix" "From Hell" and "Three Kings") about the Superman costume for the up-coming movie. Here's an excerpt from the interview...

"I can't say very much about that right now, but we are working on the construction of the fabric for the costume. We have a bunch of chemical engineers and fabric designers working together and trying to invent a new, exciting material. You have to bear in mind that Superman is an extraterrestrial, from an entirely different planet, so the fabric must not resemble anything we have here on Earth."

The film is planned to begin shooting in May and June 2004 and is more than a year away from being on screen. There isn't even an actor chosen for the part of Superman yet, but Kym says they do have a favorite in the run -- a secret, of course.

"He's an unknown actor, but he's gorgeous."

This notion of the Superman costume being made of Kryptonian fabric harks back to the 1940s-1950s origin of Kal-El, where the Kents found him wrapped in blankets inside his rocketship and Martha later used them to make his Superman suit.
