November 2, 2003: James Carson Talks “Superman Lives”

Superman-V.com managed to land an exclusive interview with conceptual artist James Carson about his work on "Superman Lives". Here's an excerpt from the interview...

Q: How do you feel about the uproar created by fans regarding the change in design for the suit - Especially the resurrection suit you conceptualized?

A: I feel like if the fans don't like it, they can pull together the financing and make their own movie. OK- that's a little harsh. Obviously in a story like Superman, one that is a part of our pop culture, it is important to be true to the feel and vibe of the characters and environments.

But I see nothing wrong with adapting or changing things to suit (no pun intended) the story you're trying to tell. The Grimm fairytells were a collection of popular stories that were verbally passed on till someone wrote it down. I cannot conceive that there were not many variations on the theme. And that's good. In some ways I think it's a bad thing to lock your mindset to the extent that you cannot evolve creatively.
