June 18, 2003: JJ Abrams Talks Superman Movie

E! Online caught up with writer JJ Abrams to discuss his script for the up-coming Superman movie...

With Warner Bros. getting close to signing Charlie's Angels' McG to Superman directing duties, we caught up with the loooong delayed flick's scribe, Alias creator JJ Abrams, for a little wisdom and sanity.

The firestorm over Abrams' script began last year with a savage online review of a leaked version, and we asked if Abrams still liked the Internet. "I love it," he said. "There was a script leak on Ain't It Cool, and there have since been more leaks and great reviews, so I don't necessarily take those to heart either. It is what it is, but you don't want the story to get out.

"So, when the story gets out, you're like, Awww. That was also the first draft of the script, and with a movie of this size, the first draft is never what is shot. It goes through so many incarnations. This story has changed very much from the one reviewed many months ago."

As a guy known for his TV writing, we asked Abrams why he was the guy to write this movie in the first place. "Like many people, I grew up the biggest fan of Superman," he said. "I have a five-year-old son who is a fanatic, so it was a great thing for his eyes. As someone who has been so disappointed by a lot of big-budget movies in the last few years, especially, there were a couple I could've gotten involved with, but like an idiot, I didn't. Then I saw the films and was like, 'Oh, my God!' So, I wanted to do something about it, I had a chance and I fought for the job."

Is a director soon to be hired? "We are closer," Abrams admitted. "My guess is we'll announce in a couple of weeks." Do you like the guy? "Yeah. I'm really happy about the way things are moving. It's been a roller coaster, but I think this movie is going to get made in the right way."

Finally, he replied with telling diplomacy when asked if he thought a big-name star or an unknown should play Supes: "Someone was born to play Superman, and I think they'll end up getting the job."
