April 13, 2003: Superman to be Filmed in Australia?

The Melbourne Herald Sun newspaper published an article yesterday stating that the up-coming Superman movie would have its production shared between Los Angeles and Sydney. It is unclear at this stage where this information has come from, and rumors of an Australian connection have been floating around for a few years. Either way, here's a reproduction of the report title "Superman to fly Down Under" written by Michael McKenna in L.A....

THE Superman movies are set to fly again with the first of three new prequels to be shot in Australia.

Hollywood insiders yesterday said Warner Bros studios were in final negotiations to split filming of the fifth Superman movie between Sydney and Los Angeles.

The only hurdle that remains for the major Hollywood studio, which has been trying to make the new trilogy for a decade, is in finding a lead actor to play the superhero, last portrayed by Christopher Reeve.

Filming is set to start later this year at the Fox Studios lot in Sydney on the movie that will focus on the origin of Superman and his early years.

At the same time, Warner Bros will be shooting a new instalment in the Batman movies, to be released around the same time as the new Superman movie, early next year.

The final Superman movie, Superman vs Batman, will have the two superheroes pitched in combat against each other.

It is unclear if the other Superman sequels will also be filmed in Australia.
