Superman

December 31, 2002: Superman Needed Now More Than Ever

The U.K. Times Online has published another article on Superman titled 'Since September 11, we need Man of Steel'. Here's an excertp from the article written by Sam Lister...

EVER since Superman made his debut in June 1938, in the first issue of Action Comics, the Man of Steel has become a global symbol of international security.

The Superman logo is one of the world's most recognisable symbols, along with images such as the Christian cross, the swastika, the golden arches of McDonald's and Coca Cola.

While other comic characters, such as Batman and the Incredible Hulk, developed complex and tortured personalities, Superman has remained an unswerving emblem of good, and in recent months the set of values held by the man from Krypton have acquired new resonance.

"Now, more than ever, we need our heroes," said Jim Hambrick, a collector of Superman memorabilia. "Since September 11 the appreciation for those who protect others has had a tremendous impact on (the image of) Superman, because he is directly associated with all that.

"There is now a greater understanding and acceptance of 'truth, justice and the American way'. Superman is not just kids' stuff, but a real emblem of security."
