December 4, 2002: Save the Metropolis Water Tower

Want to help save a historical landmark in Metropolis, Illinois, where the annual Superman celebration is held? For those of us who've had the opportunity to attend the celebration, you may remember seeing the water tower with the painted image of Clark Kent changing into Superman. Many feel that it is an important part of the city and should be allowed to remain standing. However, there has been a decision made to tear it down on January 6, 2003.

An online petition has been created to let the city know of the tower's importance. Here's how the petition reads...

To: Metropolis City Hall, Metropolis, Illinois

SUPERMAN needs your help! The 75-year-old landmark water tower in Metropolis Illinois is about to be destroyed, and you can come to the rescue with your signature.

We wish to have our voices heard regarding the landmark water tower that has been a familiar part of the Metropolis Illinois skyline for 75 years.

This same water tower, for nearly half it's life, has greeted fans of Superman to Metropolis. Since the 1970's, the water tower has carried an image of the Man Of Steel on its side. Currently, the water tower is scheduled for unceremonious demolition on Monday January 6th, 2003.

We wish only to insure that every avenue is explored to not only keep this valuable piece of Metropolis history alive, but to see it restored and protected for the future citizens of Metropolis and for Superman's millions of fans worldwide.

The results from this petition will be delivered to the City of Metropolis City Hall, The Metropolis Chamber of Commerce and the Metropolis Planet, the city's weekly newspaper.

Sincerely,
The Undersigned
