Superman Ultimate Flight Rollercoaster

April 13, 2002: Experience “Superman: Ultimate Flight” Ride

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution printed an article recently about the new rollercoaster "Superman: Ultimate Flight" at Six Flags Over Georgia's Theme Park.

Titled "Super-duper coaster" and written by Tom Kelley, the article goes indepth about the riding experience. Here's an excerpt from the article...

The newest coaster at Six Flags takes riders on a sky-high flight worthy of a caped hero

Superman -- Ultimate Flight, Six Flags Over Georgia's newest roller coaster, has been cleared for takeoff.

The park previewed the attraction, which simulates flying through the air, on Thursday amid screams of delight from happy riders.

What makes Superman unusual is that instead of riding in a seated position, riders are suspended beneath the track with their backs to the sky and their faces looking toward the ground.

There is nothing between the rider and the ground, resulting in a breathtaking view that really does make you feel like you're flying. And the riders love it.

Superman Ultimate Flight Rollercoaster "It's an amazing sensation that's never been felt on a roller coaster," said Derek Ruth, a member of American Coaster Enthusiasts, one of the groups invited to the ride preview.

The ride is one of only five of its kind in the world, and the only one in the Southeast. Superman, on the site of the former Viper coaster, represents a record investment for the park, eclipsing last year's $16 million in improvements.

John Odum, general manager and vice president of Six Flags Over Georgia, compared the ride to his love of flying. "I'm a pilot, and I love flying. But I always had to be inside a plane to do it."

Not anymore.

The flight experience begins with riders boarding seats that resemble ski-lift chairs suspended from the track above. Once the restraints are locked in place, the floor beneath the riders' dangling feet drops and the seats tip forward, eliciting screams of surprise and excitement as riders lie facing downward.
