March 5, 2002: Superman Homepage Featured in Australian Newspaper

Steve Younis and the Superman Homepage are featured in an article printed in the March 5th State Edition of the Australian newspaper "The Daily Telegraph". Here's the complete article...

Super Steve rules world By Lillian Saleh

As a child, Steve Younis emulated his favourite action hero by jumping from heights and pretending he could fly.

Today it's his website, dedicated to all things Superman, which has gone "up, up and away".

The 30-year-old's childhood fascination with the Man of Steel has just seen his website voted the world's best Superman site - averaging more than 3000 hits a day.

"I've always been a Superman fan," the North Rocks resident said. "I used to always watch the Superman and Superfriends cartoons on TV as a child.

"Which child hasn't wrapped a towel around their neck and pretended they could fly?"

Steve's fascination for all things super deepened in 1995 when he read a novel about his hero.

"An ad in the book for Superman comics attracted my attention and had me searching out my local comic shop," he said.

While surfing the Internet, Mr Younis found the Superman Homepage, run by an American named Andrew J. Gould. When Mr Gould died in 1996, Steve took charge of the website.

Mr Younis has turned a spare room in his house into a shrine to his hero, with posters plastered all over the walls and more than 100 figurines scattered throughout the room. A life-size poster of Superman takes pride of place.

Mr Younis admits waking at 6am to work on his website.

The site's popularity means he has 12 volunteers from around the world ensuring the site's contents remain current.

His efforts were rewarded when the web site - www.supermanhomepage.com - was voted the best Superman website on the Internet.

He received "the ultimate compliment" in the form of an e-mail from actor Christopher Reeve praising his work on the website.

"That was the biggest rush," he said.
