September 25, 2002: Mark Waid Sets the Record Straight

Comic book writer Mark Waid posted the following message on the DC Comics Message Boards recently, in an attempt to set the record straight on the actual events surrounding the "report" by Wizard Magazine over a year ago on the Superman pitch Waid, Morrison and co. put to DC Comics. Here's Mark Waid's message...

Hi. Been scanning the message boards lately in preparation for BIRTHRIGHT, and something's come up repeatedly that's gotten under my skin. If any of you fine message board folks are inclined to do me any favors, here's one I'd appreciate:

From now on, every time anyone, anywhere--on usenet, on a message board, at a con, in a store--quotes from or refers to "what Morrison, Waid and co. were gonna do with Superman" as "reported" in WIZARD magazine, please pass this along, directly from me to them: WIZARD's reportage was dead wrong. Third-hand and laughably wrong. And despite what its "reporters" claimed to know, no one there has the first idea of what we had planned.

Sorry to sound exasperated, but I'm just sick to death of the damage WIZARD did by misreporting our aborted plans in such a way that makes those plans--and, by extension, us--look idiotic. ("Brainiac removes the world's memory of the Clark/Lois marriage? Pretty lame!" Guess what: we agree. And that's only one example.) We all thought WIZARD'S fan fiction would die a quiet death, but it lingers on and on and on to tarnish our reputations.

What we'd offered to write will, by mutual pact, remain our secret; we're not interested in giving away ideas and concepts that some or all of us might find useful someday down the road, and I appreciate that many fans respect that. But Wizard's "reportage," which continues to make us look retroactively stupid every time someone cites it as "proof" that we're bad writers...well, I'm just tired of policing it. If anyone out there would like to help Grant, Mark, Tom and I out by picking up the baton and spreading the word when necessary that WIZARD made a lot of that stuff up themselves, it would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Best,
Mark Waid
