July 29, 2001: 60th Anniversary of the Fleischer Superman Cartoons

Press Release: CN Movies' Vintage Movie Channel Celebrates the 60th Anniversary of Superman

To mark the sixtieth anniversary this summer of the first season of Superman cartoons, Coppernob Communications' Vintage Movie Channel - launched last week as part of its CN Movies site - is screening the original 1941 Superman animated cartoons produced by Dave and Max Fleischer. These cartoons were the first time the 'Man of Steel' appeared on our screens and now fifty years later, they can be viewed on the internet for the very first time. Discover how the legend of Superman began, with a new episode added every week for the next three months.

In June 1938, the first ever issue of Action Comics introduced the character Superman. In no time, he became the most popular hero on the planet, eventually coming to life in these animated cartoons. The highly adventurous styles used by the Fleischer brothers proved so powerful that they influenced many Superman productions from that day forward.

In the first episode, the baby Superman is sent away from the dying planet of Krypton and lands on Earth, where he is sent to an orphanage. As he grows up, he finds himself capable of physical powers, but disguises himself as Daily Planet journalist Clark Kent, in order to hide his supernatural status. The newspaper gets a warning from a mad scientist who threatens to blow up the city later that evening. Fellow reporter Lois Lane catches up with the madman, but he ties her up. Can Superman save the day?

Episode two - 'Terror of Midway', features Superman fighting a never-ending quest for truth and justice with an enemy we never see. A mysterious man lets all the barriers down at a circus performance and the animals escape, creating havoc. Will Superman manage to save the day yet again, so that Lois Lane will get her ace story?
