November 8, 2009: "Superman Lives" Chest Symbol Sneak Peek

Superman Lives Steve Johnson is a special make-up effects artist who worked on the never-made Tim Burton "Superman Lives" film in the late-1990s. He recently started his own YouTube channel showcasing a "treasure chest" of archival footage showing many of the films he has worked on over a 30 year career.

At the end of his introductory film clip there's a very brief snippet of a Superman "S" chest symbol lighting up.

Unfortunately, due to Warner Bros. restrictions, Steve is unable to release the archival footage from the "Superman Lives" project in his collection.

i'm pretending i'm looking at the entrance to a 90s update entrance to the fortress - not superman's chest - then i feel better. it isn't that the symbol or image isn't interesting, it's just ridiculous on clark kent's chest. (can even see where it looks like the knives would pull out from in the "S"Wink
#2 | rsottney on November 8, 2009 12:05am EST
It looks like it belongs on Schumacher's Mr. Freeze.
#3 | Terminal on November 8, 2009 12:48am EST
I too am not impressed. That Superman S is too different to accept it as Superman's symbol. It almost looks like the S from the Electric Superman days.
#4 | Damien_Dark on November 8, 2009 2:08am EST
I'm with these guys. it doesn't fit the Sup we all know and love. BUT....you guy have to keep in mind ITS SUPPOSE TO BE FOR TIM BURTON! And if you think of his other movies it kind fits his style. Although it still not what it should be. I like it but understand what has been said bout it. (To Terminal, I agree. Electic Superman days.)

Why not??whats the problem we already know what a disaster that movie was going to be, just let us see some of the work just for fun!
#6 | MattComics on November 8, 2009 6:24am EST
Why even bring this stuff out at all? Burton had no business on a Superman project and all seeing this stuff does is make it even more painfully obvious.
#7 | Johnjones on November 8, 2009 8:06am EST
Steve Johnson is very talented. I'd be interested to see his work on Superman if the WB would allow it. This however does look like it belongs on Schumacher's Mr. Freeze.
#8 | NeoRanger on November 8, 2009 8:15am EST
Eh, it's not *that* bad. Not really my cup of tea either, but it's still entirely recognisable.
#9 | Gothamite on November 8, 2009 9:36am EST
Really cool, if obviously not Superman.

I'm guessing this is the 'see-thru suit' design where we would have been able to see Superman's internal organs.
#10 | KryptoKal on November 8, 2009 11:16am EST
This on his chest??? No thanks.
#11 | Pal-El on November 8, 2009 1:28pm EST
Well, it looks like it inspired the Superman Returns raised shield. Which, by the way, was great. I like the modern update on the SR shield. Alot.

The more I see of this stuff the more I am happy it never got made. The more I realize as bad, out of touch & out of date that Singers film was; it was probably the best of all the crap they considered. WB should give up all rights to Superman since they have no desire to make him mainstream SUPER again.
#16 | Yushky on November 8, 2009 8:57pm EST
Iv'e said it before and I'll say it again....thank god for SUPERMAN RETURNS!!! ...still waiting on the confirmation for a sequel....I've got a feeling we'll have one someday soon!
#17 | Yushky on November 8, 2009 8:59pm EST
I love the SR S as well.....amazing modernized update....also liking how they've combined it and the one from the donner films on smallville...nice touch...
#18 | SlickSyck on November 8, 2009 9:29pm EST
Yushky...

I didnt realize they combined the SR sheild design with the one from the Reeve movies. I thought it was just the SR sheild exactly as it was on the SR suit. then again, I dont think i've ever seen the SR sheild as it is without that annoying bubble type buLDge effect on it other than on the SR suit it's self. Maybe if i could see a side by side comparison of all 3 sheilds all next to each other that would help.
#19 | Johnjones on November 9, 2009 8:01am EST
Indeed they have mixed the two "S" symbols together. Here's a side by side comparison. Just open up each window next to each other.

I don't see how this is any different than the Superman Returns "\S/" in regards to it's style; neither of them would be practicle being worn under clothing.

I would have preffered to see Burtons movie made than Singers because Burtons was clearly something different as opposed to Singers which pretended to be part of exisiting history but was both vauge and contradictory at the same time.
#21 | MattComics on November 9, 2009 1:15pm EST
Hell no. At least with Returns we got something recognizable as the character. With Burton it would have been this freakin Edward Superhands thing combined with all of John Peter's insane requests.
#22 | Terminal on November 9, 2009 2:35pm EST
I'm in agreement with MattComics. With Superman Returns as least we got the actual Superman. Not a blur, not a Burton monstrosity, but the actual Superman. I'm not saying SR was perfect (After numerous viewings I can admit that) but it was exactly what modern Superman should have been.
#23 | Snookeroo on November 9, 2009 3:57pm EST

Actually, the raised "S" shield was a forgone conclusion from the moment Spider-Man appeared on the big screen with a raised spider-emblem.
#24 | rsottney on November 9, 2009 5:24pm EST
Batman had a raised bat symbol a decade before Spider-Man.

As for the symbols being a mixture ... I don't see it. Of course the Smallville S is modeled after the SR symbol for continuity. They were using that S in the comics for a while also. But I see little resemblance to the Reeve S. Clearly they are they same symbol, but the curve structure is a little different, and the width of the outline is sloppier on Reeve ... like they eyeball measured it. Very ugly, actually.

The S has always been similar, but it has changed a lot over the years.

I like the SR/Smallville S much better, but I don't like how it's raised.
#25 | Im-Jon on November 12, 2009 8:14pm EST
THAT HAS TO BE THE COOLEST, MOST AWESOME OUTFIT CONCEPT FOR SUPERMAN OR ANY SUPERHERO MOVIE!!!! REally, it's the best idea I've seen in years!!!! To bad it didn't get made!! Tim Burton IS indeed visionary!!!
