“Justice League” – Superman’s Sacrifice Pivotal to Wonder Woman Embracing Mankind

USA Today has released a new image from the upcoming “Justice League” movie, with a quote from director Zack Snyder explaining how Wonder Woman’s evolution is in part due to Superman’s sacrifice seen in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”.

With Superman (Henry Cavill) having laid down his life for Earth, Batman (Ben Affleck) and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) recruit a superteam to take on a new threat to civilization in Justice League. “It was all about the filling-out of this massive comic-book pantheon with the biggest and coolest heroes we could,” director Zack Snyder says of his group, which includes seafaring warrior Aquaman (Jason Momoa), speedy Flash (Ezra Miller) and high-tech Cyborg (Ray Fisher). Fans are getting a big character arc for Wonder Woman in 2017, beginning with her solo movie set during World War I. In it, she finds “humanity isn’t always the most kind and awesome thing,” says Snyder, also a producer on Wonder Woman. “It has its moments, but it can be brutal, and her coming to terms with that dichotomy is what we come to learn about her. And in Justice League, she’s fully evolved into someone who’s embraced mankind, partly through Superman’s sacrifice. She’s like, ‘All right, I’ve got to pick it up.’ ”

I wonder what she’ll say when she actually sees him again…

Hopefully, both Batman and Wonder Woman will have some nice words for Kal-El/Clark when he returns. Personally, I’d love to see Wonder Woman acknowledge Superman’s sacrifice and welcome him back. And I hope to see Batman say something along the lines of, “Welcome back Superman. I was wrong about you. I appreciate your self-sacrifice for the world. Welcome back my friend.”

Steve, yes, I know who Batman is. I know he’d most likely say that. This is just wishful thinking on my part.

How about letting Superman inspire people while being alive?

Either way, I think we all know that our number one interest in the JL movie is to see Superman make his comeback. This year can’t go by fast enough. The only concern I have is the after
math. How long will it be before we get another chance at seeing him again? And will we ever? If they’ve delayed the second JL movie and we’ve had no absolute confirmation that a MOS sequel is on the way, then what? Time is a flying. Were not getting younger as are the actors.

Looking at the Justice League pic has made me me wonder how much or how little Superman is in the film. I had my suspicions when Cavill started filming his scenes a month after and was finished a couple months before everyone else, but seeing this makes me think he will just be a deus ex machina plot device. Since the team is together in this picture it must be at least halfway in the film if not the third act. I think it’s the third act, because in the trailer and that behind the scenes footage from Zack Snyder… Read more »

I would say you’re correct about him showing up later. Probably at about the two thirds mark or possibly even later. Were going to see a lot of the team being put together before the battle. And it just might be that Superman’s part will only be to help save the day. I would look to this movie to bring more towards setting things up for JL2. Which of course has now been postponed. What that in itself means has yet to be determined as good or bad. Worst part is that if JL2 won’t be out the following year… Read more »

I think he will only show up in the last 30 minutes but it will be a huge Superhero entrance and he will be the focus at the end. I’m okay with this actually. I think he will costar in other movies as well even before MOS2 or JL2. so, it won’t be the last time we see him for years. In fact, I would expect him to be in the Green Lantern movie and probably Shazam

While I agree that he will probably show up towards the end, I doubt he’ll be the focus. Initially, yes, but then he’ll simply be part of the ensemble. (with Bats and WW still being the “co-leads”) And I believe Shazam is pegged for 2019 and GL for 2020, so it seems that it will be years before he is seen again and then only in bit parts. Not a good thing imo.

So let’s say that’s the case, what happens to Clark Kent the reporter? The way they had his funeral and name in the obituaries makes me believe they are abandoning that aspect of his character. I mean if we don’t see Superman till the end of the movie there isn’t enough time to do a story to reintroduce him. If we don’t see Superman till 2019, 2020 in cameos or later than that in his own movie, that aspect will make no sense to bring back a man who has been “dead” for 2,3 or more years. So is the… Read more »

To everyone’s thoughts, opinions, and expectations, only time will tell. Me personally. I’m expecting him to appear a little after the second act and have his presence felt up until his ultimate dramatic reveal. Also, I’m not all that bothered by if whether or not he has a massive role in here. I mean, he’s Superman. Everything he does has a massive impact no matter how long he sticks around. My other reasoning is because the first two films of the DCEU were pretty much focused on him. Everyone and everything in these films have traced back to Superman somehow.… Read more »

If they are going to bring Clark back from the dead, and most probably they will, Bruce will probably set up an alternative identity of a certain Clark Smith in conjunction with the rebirth titles. And like most of you said, I also think he’ll appear in the last 30 minutes or so to save the day. Time will tell in the next 10-11 months. Here’s hoping for a good movie.

In the pic, the way they are standing makes them look like action figures in a collector’s box package. Hmm… dibs on that comment if this becomes the new Caption Contest pic!

Personally I think Kal-El will be in it a lot longer than most people think, i.e…..while we see the JL setting up/meeting etc we will also concurrently see Kal maybe at the Fortress recovering, when the threat from Steppenwolf appears obvious then he will return as Superman to help the JL and be part of the team etc etc. The very first picture released of the JL even before BvS had hit theaters showed Superman front and center, also I think we will see him in the new JL trailer in some capacity. Just my thoughts 🙂

While his incapacitated body might be seen more than what is being speculated, that doesn’t count in my book.

I’m glad that Wonder Woman is embracing humanity. It’s very easy to use her as a propaganda output. She is a female ambassador for an all-female nation that tends to hate “Man’s world”. That’s too easy to modify to one’s desires a number of ways.
