July 28, 2016: Tyler Hoechlin and Melissa Benoist Talk About Superman

Supergirl and SupermanEmpire Online had the opportunity to sit down with Melissa Benoist, Tyler Hoechlin, and other members of the cast of the “Supergirl” TV series to discuss the arrival of Superman in Season 2. Here’s part of the interview…

Hoechlin: This show is so hopeful and optimistic and Superman fits right in there. It’s the ‘truth, justice and the American way’ element that I love. That’s the person you hope would exist and do what he does with the powers that he has. They’re just trying to embody that and there’s obviously struggles that go along with being someone who has that much responsibility. But in the end I think he’s incredibly happy to be able to do what he can do.

Benoist: Hope remains a key ingredient of the show. One of the things that I admired most about Kara is her sheer will and the fact that she never, ever gives up, even when things are grimmest. It’s a quality that runs in the family.

Hoechlin: Not to just sit on that word, but I do think Superman’s role is one of hope. The belief that things can be better and people with powers will do good things. I know it’s one of the issues right now in the world in that there are a lot of people in power who, if you look at it on the surface, you just assume are either self-serving or ‘evil’. But here you have someone who is capable of really taking over, but he chooses not to use his powers selfishly. Instead he helps other people. That is such a symbol and statement of who he truly is. That’s something I would really want to focus on; to make it a top priority of who he is.

Costume looks great, but i cant see him as Superman, i’ve seen him in Teen Wolf and he is not even that great of an actor.

For me, the first still shot of an actor in costume usually looks like a person in a costume (even happened for the first Supergirl shot last year), but once I see the performance, I can definitely start to buy in.

Now, Hoechlin’s performance may be good or it may be bad, we’ll have to wait and see. But I try to be pretty lenient on the first image.

Not bad. I’m really looking forward to the first two episodes.

Not crazy about the costume. I was hoping for a pre-52 costume. Or a Superman returns type.

Same here! Can’t “fix” perfection!

I like Hoechlin, I don’t like the costume. Needs the red trunks, yellow belt, and M for “man” boots — not digging the honeycomb/weird tablecloth/reptile skin-like texture they keep making all the suits. I like that the “S” is the classic design, though!

Anyway, I hope they at least make him more “Superman-like” in personality than he’s been in the last two Snyder films. If I can’t get the proper costume, I hope we can at least have the proper characterization here….don’t let me down, CW. 🙂

Oh God no…..
I don’t see Superman. They shouldn’t gotten my baby Mr. Tom Welling. What is it that the CW is smoking. Tyler looks like Edward Cullen in a Superman costume.

It’s ok. I guess my biggest issue with the costume is how the cape is attached to the suit. Plus, I don’t like it when the cape looks like leather (SR). I prefer a cloth look and feel, one that moves swiftly with movement.

Never thought I’d see the day when I thought Supergirl’s costume looked better than Superman’s.
