August 22, 2016: Concept Art From Never-Made Superman Animated Short Film

In 2013, Genndy Tartakovsky, the creator of the “Samurai Jack” animated series, had been commissioned by Warner Bros. to produce a Superman animated short for the DC Nation series. The Cartoon Network short film never made it past the concept art stage, but artist Scott Wills has released a couple of Photoshop designs he created for the project.

He writes, “Genndy Tartakovsky, Justin Thompson and I were very excited to do our take on an animated Superman but unfortunately it was pulled from us just as we were starting.”

This would have been awesome. Plus, if you look closely and squint a bit, I think YOU CAN SEE THE RED TRUNKS in the top pic!

Guess we know why DC canned it now… 🙁

I understand your frustration, but I have a suggestion. You weaken your argument when you mention it in every post. I think it’s safe to say that most know your position on the trunks. You don’t really need to mention it much going forward. Are you trying to convince others or yourself at this point? Please understand that I am not trying to silence you or prohibit your opinions in any way. I prefer the trunks as well. I merely suggest that you think about why you consistently mention them. My 2 cents anyway.

This is just gorgeous. Look at those volcanoes! That motion blur on the flight! This just makes me sad. DC, please recognize that we all pretty much saw this and immediately started crying for what we never knew we had lost and then make it up to us by making it anyway. We’ll pay you for it! We’ll pay you lots! Collectively, I mean.

But man, you really can’t see the trunks in that picture at all. I zoomed all the way in and squinted as hard as I could and the only red is pretty clearly on his cape.

There’s a haze of red in the area that the trunks should be. Whether it’s just the awful New 52 belt in motion, or the actual trunks, I cannot say for sure (though it’s a bit larger than the size a belt would be, which leads me to think and hope it’s the trunks), but I’d really like to think it’s the trunks. 🙂

It’s such a shame too. Genndy’s animation has always been very stylistic and vibrantly quick paced. Just look at Hotel Transilvania and the original Clone Wars. The fact that such a talented team of animators had their hands on a Superman short film, and were actually EXITED for the character for once, but are then booted out as fast as it started makes me sad.

There is no powerful image than depicting Superman high above the clouds. It gives me goosebumps every time. Too bad it didn’t make it past the art stage. Who knows? Maybe we’ll be treated with something similar in the near future.

I’d wonder what Genndy’s drawing approach would have been for this show. If it might have leaned more realistic. ..and by that I don’t mean in any strict sense just in comparison to his work on Samurai Jack and Symbiotic Titan.
