August 1, 2016: Calista Flockhart Makes Limited Return for “Supergirl” Season 2

150713-cast-cat-grantWhen it was announced that “Supergirl” would not only be moving from CBS to The CW, but would also move its production from Los Angeles to Vancouver, the immediate concern was whether members of the cast would also make the move… especially Calista Flockhart who plays Cat Grant.

Warner Bros. and The CW have just confirmed that Flockhart will return to her role as Cat Grant for Season 2 of the series, but will only appear in a number of episodes, not as a series regular. TVLine.com reports that Flockhart will appear in the season premiere.

Supergirl wouldn’t be Supergirl without the amazing Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant,” said executive producer Andrew Kreisberg in a statement. “We are so excited Calista has agreed to continue on the show when she can. We and the audience love to see her on screen.”

As we speculated, Ian Gomez, a headstrong, sharp-witted newsman, hired by Cat Grant to be the editor-in-chief of CatCo Magazine, is likely to be a stand-in for Cat Grant’s character on the series, as he is a man who tells people what he thinks of them, and his no-holds barred approach will push Kara in unexpected ways.

The Season 2 premiere of “Supergirl” will take place on Monday, October 10 at 8.00pm on The CW.

No disregard to to Flockhart in the slightest- she plays exactly the role they want her to play- but Cat’s characterization in pretty much everything except the New 52 and early post-Crisis really bugs me. Wolfman set her up initially as a woman with a checkered past and a desire to move forward, but Lois and Clark set her up as a target for slut shaming, later pre-Flashpoint comics followed suit and then (possibly to counter that image) the Supergirl show recasts her as a woman version of Morgan Edge! The original Cat Grant was a really interesting character and… Read more »

I’d argue that the Cat Grant we see in Supergirl could be an older version of the early post-Crisis Cat Grant you’re talking about.

It’s just that’s she’s moved past all that to get to where she is now.

Cat Grant was always a compelling charachter. While sultry in many ways during her early appearance, I found the dynamic between her, lois and Clark to be one of the most memorable post crisis comics. Lois sure was into Superman but always felt a bit jealous when cat was around Clark. I felt sorry for her son who was murderer by the toyman.

Uh, actually, yeah – it’d be just fine without her. The whole Devil-Wears-Prada version of Cat Grant is uninspired and annoying.

I’m not sold on the version of the character, but I enjoyed the hell out of Flockhart’s performance. Someone else could’ve really made the character, as she was written, far less enjoyable. So I’m glad to see her returning, even in a limited fashion.

I wasn’t very much of a fan of Flockhart’s character. I thought she was very stereotypical and not very realistic. And this Ian Gomez sounds like her character’s male counterpart, so I’m not very thrilled by this either. I guess we’ll just see what happens.
